Pelosi on conference call w/House Democratic caucus:
This is not about politics,
not about partisanship. Its about patriotism. The idea that this has anything to do with whether you like him or not forget that. Thats about the election. This is about the Constitution

(12,712 posts)Underline and emphasize that! This is the banner phrase for the movement for justice, truth and law. It is about saving the nation now.
The usual Republican/Trump deflections, false equivalencies and the rest of the logical fallacies they commit to spin things boarders on betrayal of the country itself. Their partisan game playing and false accusations are about them, not all of us.

(16,785 posts)Democrats need to hammer that message home.
This issue is about the rule of law and upholding the US Constitution. Republicans have discarded that. No Republican wants to be labeled a COWARD.

(33,343 posts)They will try to flood all media with the idea that Democrats just want to reverse 2016.
Sure we would, but if TrumPutin hadn't committed treason and other high crimes and misdemeanors, the impeachment inquiry would fizzle and die.

(11,738 posts)Of course Republicans are saying it is partisan, but the reality is that Pelosi sometimes aggressively tried to tamp down those members who wanted to impeach right away, which was also likely a good call, but which could have definitely been painted as political. Pelosi holding out for as long as she could and in the wake of the new, very clear allegations, shows that the House is acting as a response to a new threat heading into elections where Trump is abusing power (again) for the exact same reasons he did in 2016.
She played her hand very very well.

(11,738 posts)I think that Pelosi is correct that "impeachment is very divisive and we wouldn't do it unless we had to" that was a good line as well. I do think that the narrative about Trump's popularity being increased is overblown however. The pundits are comparing Bill Clinton's impeachment to this situation.
They don't seem to take into account the nature of the impeachment and investigations. Clinton's impeachment was based on what started out as a property deal which took place way before he took office. When that didn't pan out for Republicans they started looking into Hilary Clinton firing staff in her travel office. When that didn't pan out, they jumped to the Lewinsky allegations and ended up with lying to congress and obstruction because Clinton didn't just admit to the affair and tried to be cute with language. That would be akin to Democrats trying to impeach Trump because he cheated on Ivanka with Marla and cheated on Marla with Melania. I am sure he would lie to Congress about it, putting him in the same boat as Clinton, but Democrats would not do that because even though having an affair and lying about it is messed up, it usually has nothing to do with national security. I think people saw Clinton's impeachment as totally political because Republicans could not find any wrongdoing in other areas so they invaded Clinton's personal life and set him up to be embarrassed or try to hide the affair thus "lying" to Congress. They started out with political intent but at least on something that was possibly not good (Clinton using government power to benefit from a land deal) and ended up with an affair.
Trump's impeachment is about abuse of power. While the Mueller report stated not enough evidence to support conspiracy with a foreign power to affect the election in 2016, he also said that there were sufficient examples to cite 10 instances of obstruction of justice. We know that information was kept from Mueller's team and witnesses did not cooperate. Now we have new, clear cut allegations that Trump was doing it again, this time with Ukraine, to get information (or rather make up information) to damage a political rival for 2020. This is not the Democrats digging through Trump's personal life digging up embarrassing information. This is Trump actually calling a foreign leader and asking that leader to get or make up damaging information on a political opponent and possibly bribing them to do so through military aid.
I don't see the parallels.
