I hope most Americans are FINALLY getting to where I have been for 3 yrs.
MAD AS HELL!
Oh, anyone who doesnt GLADLY SUPPORT
VOTE BLUE NO MATTER WHO
is on the side of the lawless traitor criminals.
I realize this looks like I am blaming the Democrats, no I am not they and we are just in a no-win situation when an entire political party admits openly the law and constitution means absolutely nothing to them

(42,374 posts)It has been interpreted to apply broadly. I doubt that the House Democrats or the Capitol Police would take the position that the interlopers can be arrested.
Censured after the fact? Absolutely.

(63,221 posts)I am not an expert in Constitutional Law and you said it has been interpreted to apply broadly, but what they did today seems a little out of the bounds of what this clause was intended to prevent, but again, what do I know.
"The clause states that members of both Houses of Congress
...shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their attendance at the Session of their Respective Houses, and in going to and from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.
The intended purpose is to prevent a President or other officials of the executive branch from having members arrested on a pretext to prevent them from voting a certain way or otherwise taking actions with which the President might disagree."

(63,221 posts)idiotic stunts like that. I am just tired of the republicans' lack of respect for the process and for the rule of law. If there are no consequences, they will continue to push the envelope and our institutions will be rendered meaningless.

(42,374 posts)that disrupted House proceedings and broke a variety of House rules. No one was arrested for obstructing Congress or anything else. The protest (which I wholeheartedly supported) and eventually ended. The GOP, months later, huffed and puffed about reprimanding the participating Democrats but ultimately did next to nothing.
In this case, I'd hope the Democrats go further than the Republicans and actually censure the GOPers who disrupted the hearing.

(42,374 posts)Just as the Sgt at Arms wasn't called in to stop the Democratic sit in over gun control in 2016. Heck, the GOP made noises about reprimanding the Democrats who participated in the sit in (a "stunt" that I wholeheartedly supported) but they never followed up. I hope, in contrast, that the Democrats do follow up on the GOPers stunt by censuring the participants. But that's the most anyone should expect.

These ratfuckers were begging for a disproportionate response.
They did not get one.
They pitched their hissy, got bored, and left.
The hearings go on.
If people here want to go after the House Democrats, that is their prerogative. I agree with the way that the House leadership handled this.
There is a bigger fish to fry. The GOP would love a distraction from it. They attempted to create one. They failed. Some here are disappointed by that.

Cooler heads prevail and you can conserve and channel that energy. Keep yourself in the flow and go with it. We have a ways to go yet and all hands need to be on deck for this. That way, if things digress, (which they may) you can keep your equilibrium and responsiveness intact. I think that is what distinguishes us from "them". It is a good strategy, especially in a fight.
I do understand your points and agree though.

(18,486 posts)An arrest would have turned this into a bigger circus than it already was, taken the focus off of the information being gathered and onto the shishshow of Members of Congress being hauled off in handcuffs, and allowed those Members to play victim.
As it was, they got them out of there, the marauders look ridiculous and childish and desperate, the work is continuing, and the press is calling it out for what it was - a stunt that went nowhere.

(11,949 posts)They cant be arrested as congress members in congress.
They came in, hoping for a panicky reaction.
Instead they sat there like sulking teenagers. Ate their pizza. Started hearing it was backfiring on line especially when they realized the had violated serious security protocols. They the slinked out looking like losers.
The hearing and disposition, attended by those from both parties resumed.
The democrats came off like a patient parent waiting for his 2 year old to finish throwing a fit.

(1,989 posts)Bad call. They did it exactly right. They refused to take the bare and give the thugs a mediagenic moment.Of course, the thugs dont know squat about direct action, like packing a lunch if youre going to be there for the long haul to make a point, so it fizzled after a while with no plans for how not to look like utter monkeys in the process.
They are now a media laughingstock.
The handling couldnt have been better.

(9,670 posts)Your outrage has ratcheted up so high you can't see straight. You want it to end. You want peace restored. You want to know that you're living in a safe and sane country in a not-so-safe-and-sane world. You want decisions made that are sensible and not evil and a betrayal of what we're supposed to be. Dammit, it's not asking much. It's asking for a restoration of normal. It's asking for justice to be applied to those who would steal it from us. It's asking for a mass of our population that has been brainwashed to come back to their senses. It's asking that others would treat us the same way we would treat them if they dropped the sinister bullshit they're up to their eyeballs in right now.
I get why you're pissed Eliot. Can't take too much more of this shit.

(42,224 posts)They wanted to make a scene and they looked like petulant children. Keep noting that there are ALREADY something like 45 Repubs on the three committees that have the right to be in the hearings (so they aren't THAT secret!) and that the ones having the hissyfit weren't doing their own jobs--just trying to keep others from useful work.
It was a toddler tantrum--treat it as such.
