Its Worse Than Lies: Theres No Word in the English Language for What Trump & Co. Are Doing
A lie is when you cover up or deflect. But proclaiming the opposite of the truth to be true is something else.

In 2010, researchers from Harvard and Google put their heads together to determine that there are roughly 1,022,000 words in the English language. The Oxford English Dictionary lists around 600,000.
Either way, thats a lot of words. But there isnt a word in the English language for what Donald Trump and the Republicans are doing.
They are no longer merely lying. Lying is covering up the truth. Lying is, No, Mom, honest, I didnt break Aunt Donnas Hummel. Or: No, Your Honor, I did not bilk my investors out of $4 million and abscond to Grand Cayman.
What these people are doing goes way beyond that. Its a direct nuclear assault on the truth. Its not: I didnt break the figurine. Instead, its:
Mom, not only did I not break it, but Susie broke it, and I painstakingly glued it back together after she did so, and the facts that a) Susie has been away at camp all this time and b) youre looking at it there on the dining room table in 37 pieces are tricks, delusionsmanifestations of a vast, fake-news conspiracy against me orchestrated by Susie and Aunt Donna. Theyve met together recently on more than one occasion, after all, and people are saying that Aunt Donna bought two boxes of Samoas and one box of Tagalongs from Susie; and that, dear Mother, is proof of the cabal!
For this, we do not have a word. In the entire English language. Chew on that for a minute.

(86,889 posts)It's an interesting concept. I have lived through/survived having more than one family member who thinks and acts like this and i have never come up with a term or even a description of what it would look like in another context.
But I would argue that your word, which I like BTW, doesn't complete the scenario to be described.
My description, to add on to yours, would be more like a dog eating its fecal matter but then spitting it out all over everyone and then biting the victims for smelling bad. It would have to be a compound term consisting of more than one word to fully imply the whole concept.
Maybe this: Accusatory coprophagenous spewing... or something similar..? In this case it would have to be a verb phrase since it's something they are doing.

(10,721 posts)...Democrats and members of the media to call Republicans liars (as if stating the obvious is somehow disrespectful or not taking the high road) without coming up with an even stronger word.
Again, though, the points are well-taken. The Republican Party, with virtually no exceptions, is ethically bankrupt and is not acting in good faith. You can't compromise with people who constantly lie and cheat, with people who promote an alternate reality. This ain't the party of Ike.

(3,678 posts)I think we can and should lay this at his feet, even though Republicans have been doing it to some degree forever.

(21,758 posts)I will stick with 1984 doublespeak.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,403 posts)though Wikipedia points out that "doublespeak" doesn't appear itself in '1984'; there's "doublethink" (what the masses are meant to employ to accept the lies fed to them), and "Newspeak" - the deliberate restriction of the language to stop dissent or individual thinking. Doublespeak is more used for manipulation of the language, rather than an assault of the basic facts and reality.
"Counterfeit reality"?
I found this word in a Thesaurus search: "knavigation": A statement or story that is characteristic of a knave, esp. in being dishonest or fraudulent.

(18,133 posts)Nothing seems adequate:
Mean, cruel, malicious, vicious, sadistic, bullying, vindictive, depraved, corrupt, unethical, arrogant, egotistical, narcissistic, self-centered, insecure, paranoid, petty, thin-skinned, childish, immature, petulant, incompetent, fascist, jingoist, xenophobe, racist, bigot, demagogic, psychopathic, fucking moron.
All of these are accurate, but there isn't one word that encompasses all of them.

(20,019 posts)For 25+ years they've been misleading people into believing the truth is whatever narrative you want it to be. Life is easier in the alternate reality bubble...until the actual truth comes barging in.
