I like the word "united" in our real name, and I think it is critically important. It runs counter to the intentions of Trump and his fallen Republican Party.
We Dems often say Trump seeks to divide "our country," and to invite foreigners to corrupt "our country's" elections. But that is, if put another way, seeking to divide "the United States," and is inviting foreigners to interfere with "United States elections." Sounds better that way. Reminds us we are meant to be united. But it also brings to mind that Trump and his Republicans are harming something every United States citizen rightfully feels they claim as their own, the country known as the United States. I've heard our side use "United States," of course, but maybe not often enough.
Trump uses the words "our country" all the time. But it's obvious that he's not saying the word "our" with every United States Citizen in mind. Nor are a lot of hisin my opinionfan/servant wannabes hearing it that way. He is saying (and they are hearing) Trump talk about their country, not our country. Trump (twisted, spoiled, jerk that he is) is using the words "our country," words that might normally call Americans to feel more united, in a sneaky and underhanded way to divide.

(15,426 posts)When someone like the current peeResident besmirches the country that (didn't) elect him, I'm sorry that all the other countries in the American continents have to be painted with his foul brush.
And more to your point - dump is totally amoral and couldn't care less about the country he lives in. He is only about himself. Period. We'll never get him or is (R)epublicon enablers to magically become ethical and thinking. They are who they are. They are the deplorables. Tough.

(73 posts)Nope - Instead it's "OUR country," just like how (to them) he's "MY President."
As for "our country," they own it and you and I don't. They just wanted to let you know.

(30,678 posts)That was not.part of common language while I was growing up. Suddenly in 2001 the Bushies started spreading the term as part of the vast 9/11 psyops which led us to war in Iraq. Too much like Fatherland, if you ask me.

(146,345 posts)both North America, Central America, and South America, which are made up of many nations. United States is not a complete name either. Mexico is Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos, which translates in English to "The United Mexican States." Our country is The United States of America. Only that name is correct.
If you want to refer only to our nation, call it The United States of America. No other name is complete or correct.
