Super-rich prepare to leave UK 'within minutes' if Labour wins election

Wealthy see potential taxes imposed by Jeremy Corbyn as bigger threat than Brexit

The super-rich are preparing to immediately leave the UK if Jeremy Corbyn becomes prime minister, fearing they will lose billions of pounds if the Labour leader does “go after” the wealthy elite with new taxes, possible capital controls and a clampdown on private schools.

Lawyers and accountants for the UK’s richest families said they had been deluged with calls from millionaire and billionaire clients asking for help and advice on moving countries, shifting their fortunes offshore and making early gifts to their children to avoid the Labour leader’s threat to tax all inheritances above £125,000.

The advisers said a Corbyn-led government was viewed as a far greater threat to the wealth and quality of life of the richest 1% than a hard Brexit.

Geoffrey Todd, a partner at the law firm Boodle Hatfield, said many of his clients had already put plans in place to transfer their wealth out of the country within minutes if Corbyn is elected.

if Sen. Warren wins. The uber-rich aren't going to hang around for a six percent annual wealth tax.

at fire-sale prices, to the merely rich, who will be next in line to pay the wealth taxes. It will continue until the middle class gets nicked. Of course, there are people here who think that a married couple making $100K a year is rich, so I guess that will be fine by them.

I don't know of any billionaire who went broke because of taxes, in no small part because they always seem to make more than the taxes they pay. The wealthy get wealthier while the rest of us fight for crumbs.

Warren will have to get the taxes passed in Congress and that will be a challenge.

not too much, but if they did, then the British experiment will tell us what the possible consequences are.

Yes, as President, Elizabeth Warren will face major hurdles in both Congress and the Supreme Court (remember, we had to have a Constitutional amendment to tax incomes) but it doesn't mean that the wealthy won't bug out.

buy your own island, or buy the government of such a place. Without having to pay for a worldwide police force disguised as defense spending, welfare, or other costly things, taxes can be cheap if all you need is a modest navy.

1) Too many exemptions.
2) It didn't follow the wealthy when they left the country in which the tax was imposed.

Both of those problems are avoidable. And legal scholars say a wealth tax would be constitutional, in spite of arguments to the contrary.

The problem is that the only way to get a wealth tax put in place would be by executive order, and the backlash would be enormous. Millions of ignorant, poor white people would be somehow convinced that Warren should be burned at the stake for imposing something that would actually help them.

It would do my heart happy to see them have a snit because the free ride is over and end up stuck on their yachts out in international water because every country in the world tells them to scram.

The vast majority of Billionaires are freeloaders. Moochers. From helping to pay for roads and schools like everyone else, right down to today's lunch.

And it isn't even Billionaires. I used to do taxes for affluent small business owners. Family LLC types that did well enough to be worth multi millions on paper. As a whole they are selfish greedy assholes who would figure out how to make the blender they bought for one of their kids tax deductible.
