Trump wanted Barr to hold news conference saying the president broke no laws in call with Ukrainian leader

President Trump wanted Attorney General William P. Barr to hold a news conference declaring the commander in chief had broken no laws during a phone call in which he pressed his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate a political rival, though Barr ultimately declined to do so, people familiar with the matter said.
The request from Trump traveled from the president, to other White House officials, and eventually to the Justice Department. The president has mentioned Barrs declination to associates in recent weeks, saying he wished Barr would have held the news conference, Trump advisers say.
In recent weeks, the Justice Department has sought some distance from the White House, particularly on matters relating to the burgeoning controversy over Trumps dealings on Ukraine and the impeachment inquiry they sparked.
People close to the administration say Barr and Trump remain on good terms. A senior administration official said Trump praised the attorney general publicly and privately Wednesday, and White House spokesman Hogan Gidely said, The President has nothing but respect for AG Barr and greatly appreciates the work hes done on behalf of the country and no amount of shady sources with clear intent to divide, smear, and slander will change that.

(7,627 posts)Why not try it again for Ukraine? The sad thing is that given how dumb a significant part of America is, it probably would have worked.

(14,961 posts)conspiracy theories he can, he has burned up what little credibility he may have once had. People fell for his crap with the Mueller report, because we weren't prepared. Now we are onto him.

(40,210 posts)Seeking to use the DOJ for his own personal need to lie some more was even too much for Barr. This is the problem: Trump has a criminal mind.

(35,699 posts)That doesn't mean he won't try to polish the turd with some fake investigation reports, etc. But he is going to be careful as a lawyer can be about walking up to the line of illegality but not crossing it.

One person involved in the discussions said the target date for the reports release has been Nov. 20, but another indicated that the Justice Department is unlikely to deliver it by then and that it is more likely to come after Thanksgiving because of the complicated and contentious mix of legal, classification and political issues at play.
The reports findings will mark a major public test of Attorney General William P. Barrs credibility, given his past suggestions of significant problems with the investigative decisions made by former FBI leaders involved in the case.

(2,391 posts)And of course we know he's not above simply lying through his teeth like he did about the Mueller Report. But I hope you're right, and some effort is being made to impede whatever it is he has planned.
