Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI'll say this now: yes, I DO want my "pound of flesh"!
When we win the White House and Congress, I want everyone of these smarmy smirking sonsabitches who ignored House subpoenas prosecuted. And, I think the penalties should be calculated to be painful and expensive.
I do not want to hear that we have to ONLY "look forward". We can move forward most effectively if we do so on a foundation of "crimes---not just elections---have consequences". To ignore this outrageous behavior insures its repetition.
Lock 'em all up.

(15,035 posts)If we "move on," imagine what will happen the next time they get full power.
And yeah, I know the argument that when they get full power they'll "take revenge." Republicans don't need excuses to be the dicks they are. We should let them know that they will pay an extremely high price for trying to destroy our constitution. And that price must be high enough that they never even think of trying it again.
(This is a reply to the OP)
Send a bunch of them to prison for this attempt to subvert the nation, and they won't try again out of simple cowardice if nothing else.

There need to be consequences.

(9,426 posts)was a huge mistake. We could have nipped this cabal in the bud. Got rid of Cheney and many others like Gingrich who are still poisoning the political well. The W camp should have been tried for war crimes. So many people died, or suffered horribly because of that war. Plus it made the ME even more unstable. They all made money, so it was alright by them. None of them lost family members, or had one come home missing limbs. The gop is nothing but a group of selfish, greedy TRAITORS.

(5,400 posts)so many of those players in dubya's circle got their start under nixon-- cheney, rumsfeld, wolfowitz, etc. Ford's pardon of nixon was a set-up for all of the misery that has followed. If that cabal had been punished to the full extent of the law, we could have nipped this all in the bud. American policy since 1968 will be viewed by history as a massive mistake that derailed the prosperity of the late 40s-mid 60s and fed the dismantling of the middle class, leading us to what may very well be our downfall if we don't back away from the edge quickly.

(11,913 posts)the info about Russia with the American people.
I would have hoped that he wanted to go ahead and make the announcement re: Russia rather than give McConnell enough rope to hang our country out to dry. Not sure though. I would have hoped that was only Obama's decision (although I feel it was a wrong one). Truthfully, I don't see how coming out about Russia at that point would be any worse than what we ended up with.

(6,857 posts)So many Democrats are afraid - I guess - that if we insist on prosecution we will look "vindictive" and alienate voters.
I am afraid that if we DON'T prosecute to the maximum extent of the law we will look wimpy and ineffective and will REALLY lose voters - for long enough to lose democracy.
I tthink whether they would prosecute (or allow and direct their AG to prosecute and back him or her up) is something we desperately need to know about all the candidates, as soon as possible.
I don't believe anyone is asking. Yet.

Maybe not all of them will be convicted, but the Watergate mess led to 69 government officials being charged - and 48 being found guilty, including one former and one acting AG, a Chief of Staff, several WH counsels and personal lawyers, and a bunch of other WH and campaign officials and aides.

(4,341 posts)I know this is not going to fly well here but it has been my opinion that "moving forward" was the worst mistake of the Obama administration, it told the crooks that it is OK to commit crimes because the Democrats will not investigate and prosecute, so what did they do? they corrupted the election, and they put a monkey who can use a pen in the white house. Of course, they didn't count with the monkey not being domesticated and now the monkey (trump) has created havoc within their party and the world.

Sorry, but the way Shylock is presented, acts, and ends up is pretty damn antisemitic. I'm not arguing that your asking for a "pound of flesh" is Bad, hell, I want about ten pounds of Trump's head on a platter, and it's a well-established idiom, but the source of it is definitely iffy. The JOO (Shylock) is even offered payment besides his "pound of flesh", but he denies them all, even "the quality of mercy" (Portia's speech I think?) and demands the "pound of flesh", nothing else. It's some of the most amazing English language drama, and it's worthy of all that it gets, but be aware of what you demand.

That transactional mentality is what got us Trump. We gotta think more selflessly than that.
Theres a whole Department of Justice, FBI, and other organizations that will have the ball-and-chains removed from their ankles as soon as Trump and his GOP henchmen are removed from power. And their followers arent soldiers for the cause, theyre mercenaries. Theyll abandon Trump at the first economic slowdown and theyre unemployed.
