Open letter to Alabama student body: Please boo Trump at LSU-Alabama game
Although the college experience may seem ordinary at times, this weekend you have an opportunity to do something magnificent and to help turn around how the nation, and maybe world, looks at your state. Yes, you guys have great food, beaches, geography and, for anyone who has visited Durbin Farms, the best damn peach cobbler in the nation.
What you don’t have, however, is a good reputation when it comes to respecting the rights of others. In fact, those perceptions, dated or not, are pretty much that you are the most racist and intolerant state in the Union. As much as you like a #1 ranking, this is not one to be proud of. Recently, our nation’s president has been venturing out of his bubble and showing up at sporting events seeking cheers from the fans. This has not worked out too well. At both the World Series and the last UFC fight, he has been met with passionate boos from the attendees.
Convinced that he can beat the trend, his advisers have scheduled him to attend the LSU–BAMA game this weekend. Short of NASCAR, a battle between two red state powerhouses seems a safe bet for some adoration. The president has no interest in this game, and could not name what SEC stands for if you spotted him the S and the C. What he IS interested in, is the blind adulation of 100,000 fans at Bryant-Denny channeling their inner Lee Greenwood and giving him the warm and fuzzies.
He wants your cheers. He needs your cheers. He craves them.
He does not deserve them.
He deserves the opposite, in fact. On Saturday, when he most needs cheers, you need to boo him loudly, proudly and often. Why boo, you ask, and why you? Because it is YOUR future he is destroying with a catastrophic disregard for the environment, and reckless foreign policy, and trillion-dollar deficit spending. You need to boo to show that you are not OK with racially divisive language and victim blaming. You need to boo because this will be your mess to clean up.
