Haven't read the book but have first hand knowledge of the techniques.

"Professional experience studying hypnosis and destructive cults". Believe it or not, a form of hypnosis is at the root of Trump's support and most faithful followers.

Hypnosis, by definition, is the induction of a state of conciousness in which a person loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction. In other words, an altered state of consciousness whereby the person is susceptible to suggestion.

Now, we all think of hypnosis as a shut your eyes, count down slowly, relax and breathe type of state. The Melbourne (Au.) psychologist Louise Samways posits that such a state can also be brought about by stimulation; examples are chanting, hugging, hymn/song singing, group affirmations etc.

Whether these techniques are used consciously or not by the 'leader', the result is the same; a breaking down of critical thinking that leads to heightened suggestibility. Amway uses this technique and so do many other mass/pyramid marketers.

The chants of 'Lock her up' are directly aimed at the subconscious of the audience. Critical thinking is destroyed but they go away feeling good, exhilarated and connected with their leader and their compatriots with whom they shared the chants.

Louse has made her whole short book available as a PDF; it's a bit dated now - written in the early 90s, but well worth a read for an insight into the techniques.
