"If the American people only watch the first hour, they'll hear plenty" re: impeachment hearings

Geoff Bennett ✔ @GeoffRBennett

“If the American people only watch the first hour, they’ll hear plenty,” a Democratic source tells me about this week's impeachment hearings.“The first hour of each hearing is designed to be a blockbuster.”

If it's just seated question-and-answer sessions, I don't think that can compete with fiery tweets or jerk Republicans doing a conga line to the cameras to kiss Trump's butt, lie, and distract. I want some production values.

Just for one hour, please.

But I can totally see that they will insist they MUST have on a Trump sycophant as a guest to comment while or after it has started. To interpret the proceedings for all of us.

At the very least they will have a mixed panel on to ask the important questions to take up the rest of the evening. Not about what was revealed in those first hour revelations about Trump, but instead ..."Did the Democrats just reduce their chance of winning in 2020?" "How damaging will this effort to unseat an elected President go over in middle America?" and "What about Hunter Biden?: the problem with nepotism in politics".

if you have a computer, c-span.org broadcasts without comment. I usually mute hearings when the republicans are flinging shit though.

I fully expect that the major news networks, in their nightly newscasts, will do exactly what you fear. Has anyone else noticed how they are calling it a "showdown" all the time? Anything to trivialize the severity of impeachment.

"showdown"

That conjures up a wild west gun fight. Like its a showdown between two equal but opposite forces. It will be all about WHO WON that round? I can totally see each day ending with news networks turning it into a popularity contest with pollings, and who "won" that day, and who got the best zinger in. Not about what was actually revealed that day about the subverting of Democracy.

While not often the case, perhaps our party has grasped the fundamental notion that messaging matters. Accordingly, the substance, sequence and pace of the line of questioning matters.

Let's hope this is the case; also, that the media doesn't bury this "in the back of the store, on the dusty bottom shelf, alongside the teddy bears" (to use a retail analogy).

I predict that the republicans will delay, point of order, parliamentary bullshit, on and on. They are fully invested in trying to stop this investigation.

Plus the lawyer started in the deposition with a lot of legalese. That may or may not happen since these are public hearings.

It'll probably be close to an hour before the questioning begins.
