Being impeached by the House is already a certainty, it's going to happen.
It's also certain that the the Senate will never remove him from office no matter what is revealed.
20 Republicans will never turn on Trump.
Fox News constantly preaches that the extortion isn't an impeachable offense and most Republicans buy it.
So why are they so desperate to invalidate and obfuscate the evidence? What does it really matter to them?
Could it be that something even worse might potentially be revealed?
Something that no one knows about yet?
Something so disturbing that it might begin to affect Republican voters?
I wonder.

(40,220 posts)We probably know less than 10% of the crimes that have been committed. There should be no doubt that there are things not known that are horrifying. Reporters know things they havent yet reported because theyre trying to nail down verification.

When you think back on what we suspected, what we conjectured, what we assumed up until as little as a month ago, it pales in comparison to what we now know to be true.
I wonder how many Republican powers-that-be are now pressuring Trump to resign - not to save their party, but because they fear being personally implicated in criminal behaviour as more information comes to light.

(10,916 posts)Keep in mind that none of this draining is happening because of the GOP. Actually, that's not entirely true. The actual work is being done by the Democrats and career government people. They began doing this work because of the corrupt actions of the GOP.
So in a perverse way, the GOP has been involved in the draining of the swamp.
Lock him up.
(6,941 posts)Not sure the Russiablicans in the Senate will not remove the then proven fiscal fraudster.
We shall see this week. The SC can't overturn Nixon's case, no?

(12,595 posts)They really believe he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose a vote.
The sad thing is, given the make up of the SCOTUS, it's probably going to be true.

(14,494 posts)A system based on lies, deceptions, fear mongering and boatloads of billionaire money is a house of cards, so it's accompanied by much latent fear.
There's also that factor of their allergy to criticism caused by the worship of an authoritarian culture structure and 40 years of right-wing media brainwashing that any info outside their bubble is bound to be false.
They are indeed very arrogant but fragile snowflakes........

(19,972 posts)1 - the most important, it is driving Trump to distraction that he should lose face by being impeached. He doesn't handle negativity (towards him) well at all. Consequently, he is driving the GOP on to fight back.
2 - They know he'll be impeached but acquitted in the Senate, so they're using this phase to shout how unjust this is, how it shoud never have come to this blah blah. Once the Senate doesn't convist, it will be complete vindication .... dirty Dems etc.
Lock him up.
(6,941 posts)he is a fiscal felon (with BIG frauds for years), the Senate can absolve him all they want (I doubt it) but I don't think they can spin the ''dirty Dems'' meme with a AL-CAPONE-like felon for their Dear Leader.

Since he probably has kompromat on most of them, they would be in a real tight spot if voters emphatically wanted them to convict him, but he was holding the sword of Damocles over their heads.

(6,279 posts)They want to whip them into a frenzy about everything we nasty "libs" are doing unfairly to Dear Leader. Their interest is in cultivating an unending sense of being victimization by the "deep state" or the left or the modern world in general, and converting that sense of oppression into a constant simmering rage they can push to the boiling point at the election.
I also suspect they will try to use an extended impeachment trial to trot out all their baseless conspiracy theories on national TV.
