Hmmm.... seems like you're treating a GROUP - Southerners - as one and treating us with hatred and intolerance.
BIGOT.

(11,366 posts)Hell, in the South, naming your dog after someone is just a hair shy of naming your child after that person.
All kidding aside, it really is a compliment in most parts of the South.
I was at the drive-thru Walgreens and watched a good old boy with his coon hound in the back and his Yorkie in his lap make his purchase. It was so cute.

(24,773 posts)They're the ones who give the South a bad name. I know because I used to live in the South.
I have seen Southern liberals and conservatives and it's the regressives who are hellbent on destroying democracy and replacing it with a dictatorship of the rich and powerful, using religion as a weapon to control and intimidate people instead of actually bringing us closer to God.

There's lots of north bashing to go around.

Is complaining about the weather south bashing?

(5,061 posts)Time for another round of internecine circular firing squad action.
I'm a southerner, been one all my life, and my family has been in the Carolinas since 1688. Of course, this will probably invite the typical "I'm more southern than you" bullshit, but whatever.
What people don't get is how the once-solid south, with a long tradition of populism, went over to the dark side: how it is that a majority of white folks in the south, where more people get checks from the government than in any other region, and where military largesse is liberally spread around, came to drink the drink the GOP "all government is bad" Kool Aid. Most people do understand that this happened at the very moment the GOP ceased to be the party of Lincoln, and adopted its southern strategy. The same sorts of people who once supported Lester Maddox and George Wallace are still around, and I think when folks criticize a certain type of white southern person, this is who they have in mind.
The Maddox and Wallace people were teabaggers before it was even a thing. Same message, same people, different day.
Fact is, if you are a white southern progressive, you've already probably taken pains so that folks don't confuse you with these people. If you're a southern progressive, you can take pride in the fact that all eyes are on the Democratic National Convention in the Queen City.
The only thing less productive than this sort of thing is to revisit the 2008 Democratic primary.

(1,708 posts)Really, I have sympathy for you enlightened Southerners who live as a minority in the South, because your opponents appear to be knuckle-dragging Neanderthals [no offense to Neanderthals reading this post]. Fortunately, you guys are making progress in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. I must admit that almost every great American writer has been a Son/Daughter of the South!

(24,721 posts)President Kennedy inspired me so much as a young child that his sense of direction stuck with me. For an adult -- a stranger I'd only seen on tv -- to have captured my curiosity like John F. Kennedy did when I was 7 years old is my testament to how special & charismatic he was. At that age, I was wrapped up in kid stuff like playing marbles with the guys, playing jacks, hopscotch, & jump-rope with the girls, playing sandlot softball, playing yard games with neighborhood kids -- to have touched me so profoundly at that point in my young life underlines what an amazing presence he had.
For those of us living in red states, DU is a godsend in finding like minds. I believe the internet is our best hope for strangulating the backward ideas of the knuckle-dragging Neanderthals; there is no other more effective way of getting the word out or in organizing. Those southern states you mentioned most assuredly owe their progression largely to the internet's influence.

If it were not for the bigotry of the south the Lilly Ledbetter Act would not even been needed.
Same holds true with the majority of laws passed in America over the last 60+ years.
Strange telling people to shut the fuck up is ok but posting the truth about the south, which SOME consider bashing, is bad.

(5,818 posts)Of 146 House seats for the 13 states of the former Confederacy, 42 are held by Democrats. The vast majority of these Democrats are progressive African-Americans or Hispanics. Except for Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of atypical Florida, and Jim Moran of atypical NVA, among white southern Democrats in the House, voices as progressive as Lilly Ledbetter's are as common as unicorns, Check this list of the 42 southern Democrats in the House for yourself and try to prove me wrong.
