What would be the point? It's likely the only answer they would get is "No." rsdsharp Nov 2019 #2

Trump would only dangle a pardon for false testimony that would support his position. If the witness was already such a Trump supporter that he or she would perjure themselves on the substantive questions knowing Trump would pardon them, they would have no problem lying about the offer.

Conversely, if they were likely to abide by the oath to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, Trump wouldn't dangle a pardon, nor would one be necessary.

... and I'm sure the Dem's already know the truth. The flood gates of whistle blowers and folks feeling safe and not willing to lie anymore for trump, have opened despite his promises.

Also, that question is to remind the audience of the witnesses' potential motivations, and to remind them of all that has come before (Manafort, Stone, Flynn) and to remind them what kind of a president we have. You might even think of it as a rhetorical question, since it won't likely be answered honestly. But asking serves a purpose.
