...if acting crazy for so long leads one to actually become crazy (like how some have said Limbaugh came to believe the nonsense he spewed after initially putting on an act, exploiting a niche for personal gain).

Because they don't just display stupidity. They spout ideas that are absolutely nuts.

And then I conclude that it doesn't really matter. Whether they're simply exploiting the ignorance and naivete of their base by pushing batshit insane nonsense, or actually believe that nonsense, is not important. It's clear that they're desperate. They see social progress, demographic change and an increase in secularism, and so they've become increasingly outlandish in trying to delay the inevitable.

What's also clear is the need to emphasize education and media reform. Teach kids how to identify and verify sources. More civics classes. Teach kids how to identify tactics like 'projection' and the Gish gallop. Call out the media for false equivalencies, fluff, giving equal time to lies and obfuscation, etc. It was great to see Pelosi, when interviewed recently, refuse to hear and respond to the Republican argument on the basis that Republicans aren't living in the real world and she isn't going to dignify nonsense. We need more of that when Democrats are interviewed.
