Russia is anything but a democracy. Political dissidents are routinely imprisoned and/or executed gangster-style (poisoned, thrown from multi-story buildings, etc.)

Russia has such a blood-soaked history that brutal methods are commonplace. Remember Pussy Riot, the young women’s street-performance group, who, in 2011, publicly spoke out about feminism, LGBT rights, and opposition to a dictatorial Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church? They were jailed for nearly two years.
