"The third most corrupt country in the world"...

...is not Ukraine.

That would be surprising, since we heard that claim raised by multiple Republican congress members during the recent rounds of impeachment hearings. Donald Trump himself repeated the claim as a justification to pause approved aid for Ukraine.

The most commonly cited source of public corruption amongst countries is the Corruption Perceptions Index, which measures the 190 recognized countries of the world for public graft.

And if you look at the most recent CPI rankings, the third most corrupt country in the world is Syria. (Only Somalia and South Sudan measure worse.)

Ukraine doesn’t make an appearance until the 60th spot.

Which isn’t anything to brag about, of course. Like most post-Soviet states, corruption is a valid concern in Ukraine.

But 60th is a far cry off from 3rd.

And it appears that Jim Jordan, Donald Trump and company just made that statistic up completely out of thin air. Just made it up altogether.

Which is astonishing. And something you might expect from corrupt officials themselves.

You do know who fared worse on the CPI index than Ukraine?

That’s right—Trump’s “new best friend”, Putin’s Russia was 42nd most corrupt. But I’m sure they’d love to push the false narrative that their southern neighbor was 3rd most corrupt.

3. Thanks for post and link. Suffice it to say, CPI map overlaps with countries ruled by dictators

... and eerily correlates with top corrupt countries as indexed. (See article @ link, List of Dictatorship Countries 2019.) I'm suprised to find that Russia, Syria, Turkey are not at the top of list. Interested if under reporting occurs; how data is compiled, criteria used--will research further.
