Tax filing deadline pushed back
By Bernie Becker - 01/04/12 05:57 PM ET

Mark your calendars: Tax Day this year is April 17, two days later than usual.

The IRS said Wednesday that the deadline for filing 2011 tax returns was being pushed back due to calendar quirks – April 15, the normal deadline, lands on a Sunday this year.

Meanwhile, that Monday, April 16, is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C. By law, the IRS must account for both D.C. and federal holidays when setting tax deadlines.

A similar situation occurred in 2011, when Emancipation Day was observed on April 15, a Friday, and Tax Day was delayed until April 18.

In its Wednesday announcement, the IRS also continued its push for taxpayers to file electronically, and said it had implemented other features to smooth out the filing process.

“At the IRS, we’re working hard to make the process of filing your taxes as quick and easy as possible,” Doug Shulman, the IRS commissioner, said in a statement. “Providing quality service is one of our top priorities. It not only reduces the burden on taxpayers, but also helps in filing an accurate return right from the start.”
