That seems rather...optimistic considering a new iPhone XR, which is infinitely superior in every way, is $495 on Amazon; a Samsung Galaxy A9, also light-years better than a 5 if you'll do Android, is a whopping $290.

NewEgg is asking $100 for a refurbished model, but it's also unlocked so it can be activated on any carier; I'd say list yours at $125-150 and be willing to negotiate down. Outdated tech just isn't worth very much even if the hardware is new.

They buy for cash, but it depends on the condition and memory size. This can give you some idea for price, but I don't think much since it's an old model.

If it's several generations old it just isn't desirable.

Glad my wife doesn't think that way! (well, I'm not several generations old but I'm getting up there...)

Not related to your question, but I read this article recently about how powerful your smartphone is compared to supercomputers of the past. Did you know that an iPhone 5 has more computing power than all of NASA did when they sent the Apollo missions to the moon?

https://www.theclever.com/15-huge-supercomputers-that-were-less-powerful-than-your-smartphone/

I’m a nerd and just thought this was interesting.

I'm the family luddite - they are now showering us with technology because they want face to face contact. I've been happy with my Nokia forever.

17. I finally gave in and gave up my Nokia flip phone.

While I was on a trip, our landline phone quit working. Since it mainly was a dumping ground for every robocaller on the planet, I decided it was finally time to pull the plug. At the same time, I decided to switch to a smart phone. On that trip, I had taken a cell-capable tablet with me. It was my wife's. It also had a wifi hotspot capability.

Since it was my wife's tablet, I didn't want to load it down with my bookmarks, contacts, etc, so I also took my Kindle Fire, which was my travel internet device. And my Nokia phone, since that was my cell phone. Three chargers. Three devices. Feh!

So, when I got back, I called the phone company an cancelled the landline. I swapped my flip phone for a Samsun A10e smart phone. It's not a small smart phone, and I can actually even use DU OK in its full-screen mode if I turn the phone sideways. So, next time I travel, all I'll need is my phone, unless I have to work. Then, I can access Office 365 on the phone and use my handy-dandy folding bluetooth keyboard to actually type. It fits in my pocket, too.

So, no more flip phone. I've moved up in the cellular world. Oddly enough, it actually simplifies my life. Who knew? Well, I knew, but I was just being a stubborn old fart!

18. iPhone 5 not supported by newer iOS software

The latest software version for the iPhone 5 is iOS 10.3.4 which is an important update that fixes a flaw in handling precise time related to GPS. The "current" iOS is version 13, so the iPhone 5 is roughly three years out of date. A lot of applications in the AppStore require a more-recent iOS.

Apple is still providing an occasional update, but an iPhone 5 has minimal value as it loses most software support. After all, it was introduced in 2012.
