(58,785 posts)A few years ago Pew said 30,000,000 Americans expected Armageddon any time and many were looking forward to it. I imagine it's worse now. I'm without religion, but I find it easy to imagine how they can be expecting to fly up into the skies at any moment.
Trump's such a weakling that their leaders have been able to embed a lot of their agents around him and elsewhere in government. Including his VP and SecState Pompeo, both ruthless religious extremists in my view.
Robert O'Brien, the new national security adviser, reportedly advised Trump on the assassinations. He's a Catholic convert to Mormonism. I don't know if he's as fundamentalist as Romney, but the LDS church was founded by God to prepare the world for the Second Coming, and they believe they've completed that task and are also currently waiting for Armageddon. God's defenses against the forces of Satan, gathered in Russia (at least before) and Iran, will be directed out of America. I imagine O'Brien, not just Romney, is praying nightly for word whether God has chosen him, the current highest ranking Mormon in government, a surprise appointment, to lead America's armies in the Final Battle.
I'm sure this isn't what was meant by their cults coming to a sudden end, though.

(14,961 posts)It scares the hell out of me that the likes of Barr and Pompeo are running our government, hoping it goes wrong so they can be raptured.
My stepmother is one of these freaks, I haven't spoke to her in years, she messaged my son yesterday, blabbing on about Trump and being saved.🙄

(58,785 posts)Surprise from your stepmother. Hope her beliefs make her happy at least. Met a man the other day who was positively joyous as he mentioned that we were already in transition to the next world, where our bodies would be crystalline. He truly didn't seem any more crazy than a friend who thanked god in delight for choosing her to win a little raffle. (God the cheat -- had to clamp my mouth shut to keep from demanding a redraw.)
I agree it's scary, but didn't mean to frighten you overmuch, just that people aren't talking enough about the religious right's infiltration of government and the need to root extremists out. This election's about far more than some people seem to imagine.
Otherwise, hey, these waves of religious extremism come and go, including one during part of the Cold War. We're in one of those waves now, but toward the later end when the numbers of faithful are dropping dramatically, repelled by the extremism.
Sleep well. Really.

(14,961 posts)Of our government. The Family on Netflix, dives into a lot of this, even the Russia angle.(I imagine you likely watched it/read the book)
I can't believe I didn't realize you were joking. Everything is so surreal right now, it's hard to tell.

(26,501 posts)talking shit about the next Democratic administration. Just like the Ari Fleischer's and Bill Kristol's of the world. Once you get in that club, it's pretty hard to get kicked out.

(7,809 posts)Remember when they couldn't talk about anybody but St. Ronnie Reagan? When's the last time they mentioned or quoted him? That cult just kind of faded away. This one is more violent in nature, but they will find another dear leader once rump is gone.
