EXCERPT...
Now that we had our production company, we needed a script. It was then that my Hollywood friend and collaborator on this project, a famous makeup artist, told me about a script pitched to him several months before. The project, based on Roger Zelaznys science-fiction novel Lord of Light, had fallen through when a member of the production team was arrested for embezzlement, but not before initial preproduction had begun. Even better, the producers had hired Jack Kirby, a famous comic-book artist, to do concept drawings. Whats it about? I asked as I looked over the sketches. Who knows! said Calloway. Some space opera set on a colonized planet.
This is perfect, I said. The Iranians wont be able to understand this stuff. I was thinking that, for operational purposes, the more confusing the better. If someone were to stop us, then it would be easy for us to overwhelm them with confusing conceptual jargon.
What are we going to call it? I asked.
Lets call it Argo, Calloway said with a wry smile. It was the name of the ship that Jason and the Argonauts sailed in to liberate the Golden Fleece against impossible odds.

(13,907 posts)I always liked the Canadian singers work. This was right after the news came out that the Canadians smuggled out 6 American diplomats from the American embassy in Tehran.
Near the end of her performance she paused and was talking as some singers do.
Someone from the audience yelled THANK YOU!! She looked puzzled and asked ?why? The person yelled out "For being Canadian!"
She got a standing ovation and there was not a dry eye in the place....

(14,907 posts)Thank you for sharing that story, mitch96! I live north of Canada ... in Detroit.
The decades long, US-led sanctions prevent direct flights from Iran to Canada.
While I hope there is no connection to the tragic plane crash carrying so many Canadians to Ukraine, history gives reason to be suspicious.

(13,907 posts)My grandparents were fleeing Russia and Canada took them in, NO questions asked.. Y'all come.
Granted this was over 100 years ago when immigration was a lot easier..
I got to see a good chunk of your beautiful country on my motorcycle trip up to western Canada. The St Lawrence is a eye popper too..
Where I live in Hollywood Florida we have a large winter population of Quebecois.

Im just a Detroiter born in Puerto Rico, but with family roots going back to New Hampshire and Boston before 1776.
Glad your grandparents came to Canada. They really are the best.
Recently visited Queens University in Kingston, Ontario to catch a concert at The Isabel Bader Centre, one of the most beautiful concert halls on the planet. The name Bader is all over the campus, including the art gallery.
Dr. Alfred Bader was a teenage refugee from Europe, coming over in the days before WW2. After a year in a camp to determine whether he was a spy, Queens gave him a scholarship. He would go on to earn a doctorate in chemistry and later became very wealthy through his various enterprises and works. He returned the universitys support by giving back many millions, including a number of Rembrandt originals that had been owned by his family in Europe.
