(2,531 posts)she got Hillary to apologize for doing so. Of course, Hillary only apologized to get Mitchell etals to shut up about it...which they never did.

(4,889 posts)Press did exactly the same thing with him. Kept him in the limelight and printed his false accusations, even those on Truman. All seemed so familiar and they talked about Roy Cohen, sorry Cohn, who mentored IMPOTUS. So dump is just 2 steps away from McCarthy...

(3,257 posts)We've seen the same voters wearing maga hats today. They hardly ever admit they were wrong. The NYT led the charge into Iraq and fired a Pulizer winning journalist necause he refused to go along with fraud. The NYT tells enough of the truth about small things so that they are believed when the tell the big lie.
The only answer to the whole corporate press is to be vigillant and ready to counterpunch when they spread misinformation.

(567 posts)Many of my magas cite Clinton cash as "they all do it." The publisher made the Breightbart funded author make major corrections to the ebook, but the print book with lies sold like hot cakes.
Maybe we need to hold a debunked Clinton Cash book burning with none other than Hillary lighting the fire? Publicize it! Hell, ride an escalator down to the burn floor carrying a torch! Make it Huge! Play their game!

(6,095 posts)democratic leaders. They are pretty successful at their vicious attempts. They beat up Hillary for decades. Purple band aided, swift-boated John Kerry, had special prosecutor, Ken Starr hound Clinton for 8 years with their BS stories constantly in the news to sully another Democrats reputation. Al Franken got way too much press over maybe slight inappropriate touching many years ago?
Jimmy Carter.
Help me out here there are so many more examples.
Then they have this power to elevate their own amongst real scandals. Ronald Regan had a whole committee dedicated to doing just that and practically erased the whole Iran contra thing.
George Bush, media covered up so much with him, let him get away with so much.

(12,406 posts)Most recently they are attempting to destroy Pelosi. My kids live in Indiana and they are anti Trump, but Ive heard them both talk about that Pelosi and the things shes done. I asked them to explain what they disliked, and they couldnt point to anything other than they couldnt stand her personality. Im certain that those opinions were formed in a state whose citizens are drowned in Fox noise and a republican press where she is always shown as a screeching shrew. They are on the right side as they know that Trump is is an ignorant and dangerous man, but the republicans and the media are so good at blurring the lines, that even smart people are confused.

(34,481 posts)Clinton was horribly unfair to her and a complete breakdown of its obligation to the public. They owe her (and us) a page one apology and a thorough internal investigation and shakeup to determine how this biased and inaccurate reporting was allowed to proceed and repeatedly given front page space.

(10,082 posts)In the 1990s, William Safire wrote multiple columns accusing the Clintons of everything imaginable. I remember reading that he was appalled that a hillbilly like Clinton has been elected, and he was allowed to use the NYT for a vendetta against both Clintons. He was especially outraged that Hillary was an involved First Lady rather than a dressed-up mannikin on display only for state dinners. I think Safire was typical of a generation that believed that women should rarely be seen and never dare to speak on a serious topic (like health care). The NYT has never been fair to the Clintons, and I assume the Sulzberger family approved the coverage then and now.

Since then, Ive enjoyed turning his meme on him, and all his other fellow fiends, Clinton-hating knuckledraggers, and other kindred spirits on the far right.
trump, now, is the Poster Child for congenital liars. Safire would be proud. His work gave a voice to Clinton hatred, and helped beget the rise of trump.
I still cant help but suspect that hatred stemmed directly from that sides opinion that George HW bush had some divine right to two terms. But then along came this upstart hillbilly from outta nowhere (Arkansas???? WTF????) who had the gall to challenge the royal bush entitlement to two terms of rulership. And worse - to win it away from him and deprive him of his rightful place on the throne.
And my suspicions get weirder than that.
It strikes me that the GOP has a complex about divine right leadership. I think it developed from the era of the Kennedys - who were often referred to as Americas Royal Family. Oh but the HORROR! The OUTRAGE! Thats OUR divine right! God wants OUR party to rule!
And along come the Bushes with their own multigenerational photos and their northeastern patrician pedigrees, and Well, then! NOW yer talk in! Heck, screw Hyannisport Massachusetts (where the Kennedy family compound famously was located). WE have Kennebunkport Maine! And OUR Bush Family Compound!
Thats just my musing but the psychological shit I see, and have watched, playing out from all those dynamics over the years leads me to this analysis.

They were not the only ones, but seemed to lead the charge of false accusations and propaganda against Hillary. In doing so they legitimized it, and have sullied themselves in the process just like everything that touches Donald Trump/Republicans.

(20,006 posts)There's probably more still that hasn't been fully reported. Like why didn't his "hometown paper"--most likely to know or be able to investigate his history--spend time during the campaign exposing his corruption in NYC such as dealing with Russian mobsters, screwing contractors and other examples of getting people over a barrel and sticking it to them, racism, fraud, Epstein connections, sexual predation, extramarital affairs, drug use, tax evasion, etc.? There could be more than that. Did Wall Street "convince" NYT executives to stand down "for the good of the city/state/markets"?
Instead they chased imaginary squirrels.

Part 5His guest had already been fooled: Early on the morning of Thursday, April 23, the New York Times new bombshell report appeared on line.
Thats the way Chris Hayes described the report on his cable program that night. You could almost say that the affable youngster was observing the New York Times rules.
According to those unwritten rules, members of the upper-end press corps arent allowed to tell the truth about the patterns and practices of major mainstream news orgs like the Times. In a larger sense, they know they mustnt discuss the actual way the upper-end press corps works.

One of the most common tools of autocrats around the world is to use law enforcement as a weapon to go after political opponents, explains Ian Bassin, executive director of the nonpartisan organization Protect Democracy, which has litigated against Trumps unconstitutional actions. That this misguided investigation has been brought to an end is a sign the walls of our system are still holding; that it was allowed to happen at all is a sign that Trumps constant pounding at those walls is producing cracks." Bassin adds, With a president who has boasted wrongly that he can do whatever he wants with the Justice Department, we cant afford to just hope that sanity prevails the next time and there will be a next time.
Former Clinton adviser (herself a victim of the WikiLeaks email hacks) and president of the Center for American Progress Neera Tanden says, The full exoneration of Hillary has been a long time coming. But apparently, we have longer to wait for full accountability for the medias coverage and entire lack of proportion of these scandals. She added, This isnt academic as we already see signs of the same kind irresponsible coverage again in 2020. Its ironic that institutions that demand accountability of others offer so little of it for their own mistakes.
Lets not forget the Justice Department itself went along with a baseless investigation. DOJ, as even Comey did, should have the decency to affirm publicly the absence of criminal conduct. However, this is the Trump Justice Department, so Clinton should not hold her breath.
Its deeply concerning that DOJ may have been used as a political tool for the president-conducting yet another investigation into Hillary Clinton, absent predication, says former federal prosecutor Joyce White Vance. When the time comes to do the work necessary to restore and strengthen democratic institutions, defining DOJs independence from political interference in conducting criminal investigations will be a priority.
