In a tweet, Trump called on the Senate not hold an impeachment trial and to dismiss the articles of impeachment against him.

The president has gone from demanding an impeachment trial to demanding an impeachment trial with witnesses to now wanting no impeachment trial at all. Trump wants Mitch McConnell to make it all go away.
However, as Speaker of the House Pelosi said on ABCs This Week, Lets be optimistic about the future, a future that will not have Donald Trump in the White House one way or another. Ten months from now we will have an election if we dont have him removed sooner. But, again, hell be impeached forever.
It doesnt matter what Mitch McConnell does, because he cant make impeachment go away. For the rest of his life, Donald Trump is going to be an impeached president. It is a stain on the Trump name that will linger for generations.

(48,955 posts)I am sick of reading stories/comments that suggest that "impeachment can be dismissed" as if it can be erased as if it didn't happen.
There may be (most likely will be) no senate removal. But the impeached part is done, cemented in history.

(43,176 posts)To considerable extent I'm beginning to think this is beyond our control. If the GOP Senate wants to tar itself, we'll just have to add the feathers. If they actually hold a trial with witnesses and whitewash the outcome, it's no different. It could even be we'll be better off avoiding a trial and letting the outrage build, that way MAGAzis cannot blame Senate Democrats or the House for the outcome, but the public will still be royally pissed.
This has become so big, and so engulfing, especially now that the fix for 2020 has been uncovered, I'm just not finding a bad outcome for us. There is relief in pushing the rock to the top of the hill, and letting gravity dissipate the energy. We can't control the narrative, we can only expose it and make a lot of noise.

(24,504 posts)A significant majority already thinks he ought to be impeached and this won't help Trump or Republicans in the Senate if they refuse to listen and probe the articles of impeachment. They can cover Trump's ass, but their ass will be hugely exposed in the next election cycle.

Trump was impeached. That judgment has already been passed. He shall remain an impeached President now and for always.
The Senate, for its part, can only determine whether or not he gets removed from office once he has been impeached (which, to repeat, has already happened). They cannot reverse an impeachment, invalidate an impeachment, or make an impeachment "go away."

(12,586 posts)Actually, his impeachment will follow him long after he has died. In every history book written from now on he'll be designated as "Donald Trump, who is only the third president to impeached..."
No schools will be named after him, nor aircraft carriers christened in his name. No city will bid to host his presidential library. Every building will have his name removed (this has already begun). There will be no holiday named in his honor. After she divorces him, Melania will assume her maiden name, and do the same for Barron, who Trump refers to as "Melania's son." Ivanka will become "Ivanka Kushner."
And worst of all -- from his point of view -- he will never even be considered for a Nobel Prize.
