Franklin College president fired after arrest for sex crimes: 'We are deeply shocked'

INDIANAPOLIS – Franklin College fired President Thomas Minar over the weekend following his arrest in Wisconsin for sex crimes, and is launching an investigation into his behavior while at the Indiana school.

According to a statement from school officials, Minar was arrested in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and charged with use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime, child enticement and exposing a child to harmful materials or narrations.

The college was made aware of the "deeply disturbing incident" in an email from the Sturgeon Bay Police Department and the Board of Trustees "acted immediately," according to school officials.

“The safety of our campus community – especially our students – is always our first priority," said Jim Due, chair of the board. "We are deeply shocked and gravely concerned by the reported behavior of Dr. Minar that led to his arrest in Wisconsin, and we will continue to cooperate fully with authorities

Minar previously worked for seven years as vice president for development and alumni relations at American University in Washington, D.C. He has more than 30 years of experience in institutional fundraising, alumni relations, external affairs and higher education administration at several academic institutions, including Roosevelt University in Chicago, the Chicago Theological Seminary and the University of Illinois.

Board of Trustees President James Due had praised Minar for his role in helping Franklin raise funds for the school’s new $17 million science center.

Franklin, founded in 1834, has an enrollment of just over 1,000 students and offers 50-plus majors in 24 academic disciplines. Its 207-acre campus is in Johnson County, about 25 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.

Minar has a doctorate in political science from Northwestern, a master’s degree from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern, and a bachelor’s degree from Pomona College.

Early in his career, he taught political science and management strategy at Northwestern University.

He is a native of the Chicago area and married to Dr. Frank Becker, an academic physician at Northwestern University and director of pulmonary and critical care at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.

(CNN)A British woman has been sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for pretending to be a 16-year-old boy in order to groom and sexually abuse young girls.

Gemma Watts, 21, pleaded guilty to seven charges of grooming and sexual assault in November 2019 and returned to Winchester Crown Court for sentencing Friday, according to a police statement.

Watts pretended to be a boy called "Jake Watton" to groom and sexually assault her victims.

"In this particular case, Watts targeted her young victims on social media platforms and duped them into believing they were entering into a relationship with someone whom they could trust," said Phillipa Kenwright of London's Metropolitan Police force, who was one of the lead detectives on the case.
