I remember hearing Rachel as an occasional guest on the Ed Schultz show, on "Air America" network. After that, Rachel was a guest on MSNBC, Keith Olbermann show. Therefore, some hosts helped her along the road and must be given a little credit for that interview last night. No one in TV land makes it totally alone.

(38,436 posts)...You don't get to the top without help and exposure elsewhere. Someone takes a chance to give you a chance. This is not about "white guys" who helped, but other radio and TV people who featured her. Without that, Rachel would not have gotten her own show. Her own show gave her the strength and power to have this interview.
....Generally, people do not get to the top alone. For whatever reasons, people help along the way, and make it possible to get to the top. That is what is being pointed out.

(38,436 posts)Keith Olbermann. His presentations were really great. Then he was on some sort of show that you could only get on the internet. I posted that one in the Video & Multimedia forum.
..I miss him too. And I watched his last show, and he said that, "I want my life back".., and that is why he stopped doing those shows. Because it took a lots and lots of time to prepare the shows and the commentaries.

(56,828 posts)but, I remember thinking that Rachel was actually pretty bad the first several times she subbed in for Keith. (And, I had liked her on Air America) It's a tribute to her talent, hard work, personality and smarts that she improved so much in such a short time that she got her own slot and became a star.

(56,828 posts)I remember him challenging his "Dittohead" friend every week with a Rush Limbaugh quote, Al proving the quote was false and then the friend still sticking with Rush. Finally, after many weeks of doing this, a frustrated Al gave his buddy 30 days to find something truthful on Rush and the guy failed, and then the guy basically admitted that he didn't care that Rush lied all the time - he just liked Rush's attitude. Sort of like how Trump supporters don't care that he lies all the time as long as he's "owning the libs"

(5,230 posts)She and a woman comedian had a show on Air America when it started up. Ran in the morning. Can't remember the name of her cohost and haven't seen any comments from her for years.

(56,828 posts)was the comedian. Winstead - the woman that helped bring Stephen Colbert and Lewis Black to the Daily Show... (so, if there is ever a Colbert appreciation thread, we can also point out that his success was helped by Winstead in a big way.)

(10,155 posts)They get some credit for helping her get started but they don't get any credit for her current work. Maddow has earned her success by hard work and talent. It's like giving the guy that taught Henry Ford how to repair bicycles credit for creating Ford Motor Company. And I'm not even a fan of Rachel Maddow.

(7,324 posts)I mean, NO ONE makes it on their own really. We all have people who have advocated for us, mentored us, given us a shot, etc. That does not devalue our accomplishments when we make them. It simply justifies the faith others placed in us.
I'm doing everything I can to give my daughter the chances I think she deserves, but what she accomplishes is on her.
