This morning's Washington Journal ...Thedore Johnson....."Black Voters and Campaign 2020"

I don't know anything about this man. I just woke up early and turned on CSPAN and he was on. He's with The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law as a Senior Fellow.

Among other things, he was discussing "myths about black voters".

He said that one myth is that black voters won't elect a gay candidate. He said that the lack of support for Buttigieg isn't because of his sexuality and went on to discuss the other reasons that Buttigieg is polling between 0 - 3%. He continued by saying that black voters elected a black gay woman for Mayor of Chicago. He then said that one pastor said "If she had kissed her partner in a black church she probably would've been asked to leave but we supported her anyway because her sexuality doesn't matter to us when it comes to politics." WHAT!!!!!????????? Would the pastor have asked a straight man to leave if he kissed his straight wife?!?!?!?

I tried to call but couldn't get through.

(Go to the 3:30 where he starts talking about Buttigieg until around 4:40)

things arent as bad as they used to be, but "the black vote" is not a monolith, and the fault line is along the same things as the evangelicals and sane xtians.
but it's a subtle thing. there have been whispering campaigns about quite a few black polls here, including harold washington. they cant afford to be overt about something that can come back and bite their own.

it's pretty much broken down these days, tho. this isnt alabama.

Not to mention his dismal race relations record as mayor

No question.....And my understanding is that he has dismal race relations so that's unacceptable-(maybe that's why he's not connecting.... duh....I get it)...That's not what I'm saying. My concern is an intrinsic homophobia that one doesn't even realize exists- (I may not even be wording this correctly). When the CSPAN guest was speaking and said what he did about the pastor asking the gay couple to leave the church but would still vote for the candidate.....
