My blinders are on. Is it because people feel sorry for him being on trial the way they felt sorry for Clinton? Im referencing the ABC/WP poll today that shows hes the most popular hes been ever, well tied.
Why does committing treason and selling out your country to Putin not matter to the average joe? In fact, it almost seems a net positive?

The whole point of the FD was to not have a media outlet aligned with a political party, we saw how bad that could be in the 40 - 60s.

(19,479 posts)That's always the most important factor. Most Americans, or at least enough of them, think the economy is very good, and they give Trump credit for it.

(59,504 posts)Pretend it is 1999 and you personally think Clinton behavior was inappropriate. There are two kinds of polls fro the President. Favorability and Job approval.
Consider job approval - lets say you are not happy with either the crime bill or the welfare bill. If there were no impeachment trial, you might say disapprove. With impeachment, you will say approve - just because you think impeachment is out of proportion to what he did.
Now consider favorability - again, while impeachment is going on - even if you are furious that he lied to his entire team (and HRC) - you likely would say favorable.
Going back to today - the Trump propaganda is that he now has these incredible trade deals that only he could have achieved. (Even though the NAFTA replacement was mostly things that were in TPP and China does little more than take us back to where we were before Trump's trade war that greatly harmed the US) Also, the economy is good - he says. Add in they think the Democrats are unfair - he has gained the few rw people who were not for him before.
Editted to add that there is no strong trend of improvement in his job approval - http://pollingreport.com/djt_job.htm

(3,814 posts)1. The economy isn't terrible. We can argue who should get credit for it. whether it's really as good as Trump claims, and we can point out that segments are being left behind, but for most people, right now, it isn't terrible.
2. Trump and the GOP have mastered appealing to visceral, emotional issues that energize the base. Guns, abortion, immigration, etc. Democrats do it too on their own set of issues but they aren't as good at it as Republicans and the Democratic base isn't as monolithic as the Republican base.
