DONALD TRUMPS presidency has been, among other things, a war against truth. So its fitting that in making the case for his removal from office this week, House impeachment managers showered the Senate with facts. Over and over again, Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) and his co-managers laid out the hard evidence that Mr. Trump used presidential powers to pressure Ukraine into announcing investigations that would aid his reelection campaign, and that he engaged in unprecedented obstruction of Congresss subsequent investigation.
Videos of testimony and damning statements by Mr. Trump, as well as images of revealing text messages among administration officials, were exhibited repeatedly on the Senate floor, prompting some Republicans to complain that they were being forced to rehear the same pieces of evidence. So be it: GOP senators intent on exonerating the president without bothering to fairly consider the case against him should at least be forced to face the reality of his abuses. Meanwhile, busy Americans who took the time to tune in to the proceedings for even an hour or two between Wednesday and Friday likely heard a substantial version of the case.
Mr. Schiff made clear the extent to which those gaps exist because of Mr. Trumps stonewalling, and reminded senators that they have the power to remedy them. Wouldnt they like to read a memo the acting ambassador in Ukraine sent to the secretary of state about the suspended military aid?, he asked. Wouldnt it be useful to hear former national security adviser John Bolton explain what he meant when he said Mr. Mulvaney and a U.S. ambassador were cooking up a drug deal with the Ukrainians?
Mr. Schiff pointed out that, whether or not GOP senators demand relevant testimony and documents during the trial, more facts will eventually come out. Those who choose now to disregard the evidence against Mr. Trump and abet his obstruction will be reduced to watching in the months and years to come as the case against him and against their abdication of constitutional duty grows steadily stronger.

(43,173 posts)Their party has spent every dime of their political capital. The Democratic equivalent would be nationalizing all industry and writing checks for $5,000 a month to all citizens. Republicans are on their political death beds.

(10,003 posts)Fox News certainly will hide any new information to protect Trump. Im also beginning to suspect that Republicans are as fearful of Fox as they are of Trumps vindictiveness. Any Republican who votes against Trump will be excoriated by Foxs Trump cabal and they will tell voters not to vote for that personperhaps more effective than Trump tweets because they reach millions of his voters who are not on Twitter.

(36,060 posts)This is how the false reality of the US Civil War was considered. They made up their alt-version, taught it to generations, no matter what history books said.
These are the kinds of Americans WaPo doesn't understand. They exist in every region.

(3,495 posts)that far worse things would happen if they gave up power to Dems. It's just that simple. At this point I think we are in something similar to a spousal abuse situation. The only remedy is to cut ties with as many of these people as we can by structuring government spending such that tax revenues stay close to the area they are collected. If your county/state takes in more government money than it pays out then your area takes the first cut. It's pretty apparent that blue areas are generating more tax revenue than red areas and the current tax structure funnels more money to red areas than blue (at least in my state that's true).
