U.S. Plans to Evacuate Citizens From Epidemic-Stricken Chinese City

SHANGHAI—The U.S. government is arranging a charter flight Sunday to evacuate its citizens and diplomats from the epidemic-stricken Chinese city of Wuhan to the U.S., a person familiar with the operation said.

The operation comes as the death toll from a newly identified coronavirus that originated in Wuhan climbs above 40 and the number of confirmed infections tops 1,200, with many of the cases in and around the central Chinese city of 11 million people.

The fast spread of the disease in recent days across China and around the world, including two cases in the U.S., has raised fears of a deadly contagion.

Roughly 1,000 American citizens are thought to be in Wuhan, and the U.S. consulate there is reaching out to the ones it knows about to offer them a seat on the plane, the person familiar with the matter said.

assuming that the exposed U.S. citizens will be immune.

Evacuation to the US is a stupid idea. I feel sorry for the US citizens there (as I do for anyone there). But flying them (and the virus) about the world is not the solution.

3. Good. Let's do everything possible we can to bring the virus here.

Somehow I don't think being a U.S. citizen makes one immune to the virus - so chances are that some of those 1000 U.S. citizens are already exposed from being in the most infected place in the world right now, and will take it to wherever in the US they are evacuated to. Sure hope they at least impose a quarantine.

Those 41 deaths are from people with underlying medical problems or weakened immune systems. There is nothing wrong with being concerned and cautious, but pumping up unnecessary hysteria doesn't do anyone any good.

Fortunately, the virus seems to cause only minor symptoms — such as fever and difficulty with breathing — in people who are young and healthy. Most of the 41 deaths tied to the coronavirus to date have been in people who were at least 50 years old with underlying medical problems or weakened immune systems, Chinese officials said.

“We don’t have evidence yet to suggest this is any more virulent than the flu you see in the U.S. each year,” said said Dr. Michael Mina, an epidemiology researcher at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “Most people, with proper medical attention, will do just fine.”

has mentioned what we are going to do with these people when they get back to the states. Not one. As a citizen I want to know. If it is done Trump style they will be released if they do not present with the symptoms with a promise they will go see a Dr. (in 6 weeks when there is an appointment available) if they do become symptomatic. When the entire things runs through and our country and most of the rest of the world picks itself back up Trump will declare victory and if we are very lucky those left will throw him in prison and throw away the key if he indeed messes this up and really, what are the chances?

One other thing, they have to sign a promisory note that they will pay for their flight back home at a cost many times over a normal flight. Do our CEO's have to do this or just your normal, average American family over for a once in a lifetime trip or a reunion? Can't our country afford to fly our citizens out of harms way? Oh yes, the wall. Guess not.

This happening under any circumstances should cause us great worry but under this administration I have no hope anything will be done right.

Just feeling very out of sorts with this information. I know it is early and I know it may never come to pass that it becomes a dangerous pandemic but as a nurse I am very afraid of how this is or is not going to handled. We used to be able to handle these things better and now being put to the test we find that we let all of that go, useless governmental spending.
