"Now you know how we felt when Obama was president"?
But I am a POC.
Have you ever asked them to expand on that comment and if so, what was their response.

(32,015 posts)About how Trump has restored America's standing among the world's leaders. They brag about the economy he supposedly created. They marvel at how he is "keeping us safe" from those evil, disease-ridden, criminals crossing our border. You know, the same old B.S.
And how Obama went on an "apology tour", gave away "free stuff" to lazy people, etc. etc.

(23,123 posts)I said "Obama did nothing bad in most people's eyes except being black, do you want to hear the totally awful un-American things drumpf is doing that are never covered on Fox? The person laughed and walked away mumbling something about sour grapes. That's really all they have, I've heard that phrase so often from former classmates.

(32,985 posts)Their tons of self pity and sense of being victimized is reflected on that sentence. So many cannot imagine that our ethos and praxis are not much like theirs.
So, if you feel safe to do so, keep asking , "can you tell me exactly what you mean?" Point put the hanging racist photos versus a baby balloon

I live in an area that went just about 80% for trump. So, I hear that kind of BS often.

Ive given up arguing about it. A friend (who is actually a Dem and hates trump) is totally convinced that Obamacare ruined her health insurance. Shes on her husbands employer plan and they switched to a high-deductible plan and blamed Obamacare. I told her they could have done a high-deductible plan long before the ACA passed but knew it would be unpopular, so they took the opportunity to do so when they had a scapegoat. And naturally the Republican owners of the company chose to make the Dems look bad while doing so.

(32,015 posts)And the last time I was at my doctor's, the nurse there was trying to tell me that my ACA bronze plan is considered Medicaid. I replied that it is not but she was adamant.

(9,268 posts)Or those lazy bums getting a free ride when people have Medicaid. My daughters a nurse and hears that crap from other nurses.
I know a guy whos self-employed and has an Obamacare plan. Complained at great length about how it costs him more than his old junk plan. Then he had heart-bypass surgery which the plan covered. Still complains about the price of the insurance. Telling him hes got one major pre-existing condition falls on deaf ears.
Ohiogal
(32,015 posts)that line about "lazy bums getting a free ride on Medicaid" ...........
And just yesterday, there was a story on our local TV website about how our local for-profit prison is no longer going to warehouse illegal immigrants waiting for deportation. Someone wrote after the article, "It would be a lot cheaper to just shoot them all." Where this deranged mind set comes from, I have no clue. My right wing father would have never said anything like that.

(1,990 posts)That is a typical statement from them. I remember hearing Cant wait to get rid of the n$@*#* in the White House from several right wingers. They are not worthy of my time and cant be reasoned with. It is mainly a perceived loss of white standing in society. They blame all of their problems on others (Blacks, Jews, Mexicans, Liberals, educated elitists, etc.). Very similar to Nazis.

Then they go on to tell me how divisive he was and how hes the real racist. What planet are these people living on? Oh yeah, the economy sucked under Obama and hes the one that put the kids in cages and hes the one that was working with Russia. Its like Pee Wee Hermans I know you are, but what am I?. Anything you dont like about Trump, Obama started it or did it too. I know a few people insist Romney won the election and Obama stole Ohio. I dont remember the basis for this claim, likely because it was nonsense.
Ohiogal
(32,015 posts)"He was the most divisive president ever!" That's when they lose me.
You're right, they're not only residing on a different planet, it's a different universe!
VOX
(22,976 posts)And the right wing loves false equivalencies.
Obama was perceived by them as an enemy because of his color, his background, his education, his popularity, and his very name. And the mob was egged on by the usual talking heads.
In contrast, Trump is in FACT a genuine existential threat to American law, democratic foundations, security and influence. He and his cult followers are pushing hard to bring a dystopian future into the present; to several degrees, theyve been successful already in moving the country toward that goal.
THE LONGER TRUMP IS IN POWER, THE WORSE HE WILL ACT, THE MORE LINES HE WILL CROSS UNHINDERED. Our institutions cannot survive another Republican term. GOTV, especially in the swing states. Your very existence as a free American citizen is at stake.
Ohiogal
(32,015 posts)They will tell you that Liberals always have to play the "race card"!
VOX
(22,976 posts)-Race card!
-Socialism!
-Overturn a legitimate [*gag*] election!
-Keep your government hands off of my
healthcare!
-The economy is great! Jobs for blacks, too!
-Were not a democracy, were a republic! (A vintage idiotic chestnut that seems to have new life of late on the internet.)
