GOP mutes Dem leaders on House floor

House Republicans on Friday morning muted Democratic leaders on the House floor during a brief pro forma session.

Seven Democrats — including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Assistant Leader James Clyburn (S.C.) — stormed into the chamber just after 10 a.m. in an attempt to blast GOP leaders for remaining on vacation amid an unemployment crisis.

It didn't go well.

"They'll telling us they were here late in December, so they can't be here in January?" Pelosi said at a press briefing in the Capitol. "What is this, one month on, one month off?"

"You can't have it both ways," Pelosi said. "You can't say we're in session but you can't speak in the House chamber."

"If we are not in recess, then why are we not in session?" echoed Waxman, senior Democrat on the Energy and Commerce Committee and another member of the payroll tax conference committee.

2. Excellent, Democrats

Now - and I can't say this enough - get in front of the teevee cameras and say these things. Low information voters (and their name is Legion, for they are many) don't quite grok all of the subtleties and nuances of Insider Baseball. But present them with a very simple stand, and they'll get it: House Republicans aren't convening House sessions, and Democrats are eager to get to work. This is an easy one. Knock it out of the park.

A young woman named Kelly Eubanks, identifying herself as a mother who worked two jobs and attended college, rose to inquire of her freshman Republican congressman. She wanted to know why Womack favored continued subsidies for oil companies but voted, on at least one occasion, to cut Pell grants so vital to her pursuit of higher education.

It was a perfectly fair question. It represented the very kind of interaction that a congressman’s town hall meeting with constituents ought to produce.

So the young woman kept interrupting him to say he wasn’t answering her question. So he kept talking a little louder to say he would answer if she would please consent to listen.

Someone in the audience told Eubanks to get a job, maybe at Wal-Mart, and there was laughter. But she had previously explained that she had not a job, but two. And this mindless heckling reflected the meanness and insensitivity of the chronically rude and huffy modern right wing in American politics.

Afterward Eubanks appeared shaken as she told a local television station that Womack had not answered her question and basically advised her to join the military.

8. I would suggest this ...

Since the Republicans are controlling the "C-Span" cameras ... the Democrats should invite the camerapersons from MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, and all the other "liberally-biased media" into the chambers to record the "sessions".

As soon as the Chairman gavels the session in, the Dems should have the "liberally-biased media" go live with the coverage, and demand the Republicans appear for the non-session sessions ...
