I keep my pantry well stocked because I live out in the country and if you don't have something you do without. In an over abundance of caution, and total distrust of Trump's self-serving public health protocols, I made a shopping list starting with pet food.
Next is whole milk powder, dried beans, cooking oil, and some fruits to run through the dehydrator. I'll order some staples like all purpose flour, bread flour, cornmeal, steel cut oats, salt, sugar, ghee, maybe some bottle water. Canned meat and some dried sausage that doesn't need a fridge. TP is the only paper product I'll buy, batteries, soaps, bleach. It's not going to be a very long list as I have a lot on hand already, so my budget is $100 - $150, items that can go back into my normal rotation with no waste once the crisis if over.
Anyone else planning on stocking up, and what's on your list?

(14,743 posts)Of course, it does make you hungry, so food stocks are a must.
I also re-upped staples I would normally use anyway. Nothing excessive, but enough to carry us over if the crazies strip the shelves for a week or few.
Yes, a full bin of kitty food and litter as well.

(2,193 posts)We have about 3 months worth of food if needed including coffee, plan on some extra TP and bleach and some other basics that we don't normally stock up on, have milk cow so that is good pretty much can go 2 to 3 months if needed and if it really looks bad longer by minor rationing ..

(58,785 posts)to the epidemic is the point to stocking up.
Nothing nicer than being able to throw wood on the fire and settling back to appreciate the wonderful luxury of home during a major ice storm. An epidemic isn't, but it'd still feel real good then also.

(29,199 posts)I am expecting to possibly "self quarantine" starting as soon as next week.
I am older and have pre-existing conditions. Masks are ineffective at preventing infection and all the hand washing in the world won't stop me from being infected if someone at work sneezes on me.
And I expect that the true infection rate (here in northern California... and some other hot spots in the US) is much much higher than the official total.
The current world wide fatality rate is (officially) 6.5% based on infection outcomes (the real way to measure fatality rate). And though it is likely to drop based on even more outcomes, this is based on nearly 50,000 cases with reported outcomes so far. Even if that drops more, the fatality rate is likely to remain high, much higher than a standard flu.
Paranoid... a little bit. But this virus has to potential to be nearly as bad as the Spanish flu... which lasted for 2 years, Covid-19 has been here for 2 months or so.

(15,090 posts)Lots of cat food for the spoiled critters, toilet paper, coffee. We tend to use a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, so I got some frozen, just in case. Otherwise, Im not very worried about food because I keep a lot around normally. I dont really get why people are buying bottled waterI will continue to drink filtered tap water as always.

(4,554 posts)Would like to have at least two weeks worth in case it hits the fan here in Alberta (nothing reported so far). Fired up the freezer and have it stocked with bread, milk (pour some out of the bottle to leave a space and it freezes/thaws fine), and frozen vegs.
Can't find masks, hand sanitizer or isopropyl alcohol anywhere here. Luckily I had purchased a couple of N95 masks a few months ago for shop work so I can use those if need be. I have some isopropyl on hand as well and am wondering if it would be useful to spray mail or parcels?? I suppose bleach would also serve.

We arent hardcore preppers, but have always felt its a good idea to be able to weather any storm, natural or man made. We just feel better knowing we wont have to scramble to be ok if we have to stay put for a long period of time. Rural Ohio is great, but we definitely need to be self-reliant if necessary. Weve been gradually building up.
If we were told today that we have to stay home for a year we wouldnt panic, even if there was no electricity.

(3,585 posts)car for very long, I finally settled on a few cans of high quality cat food for my car survival kit.
The idea of eating cat food was repulsive enough to leave alone, but I also knew that in an emergency it was a completely adequate food for a short time and palatable enough for that purpose.

I went shopping Thursday night before masses of people hit the stores. Whatever I couldn't get then, I've been able to order from Amazon Fresh and Target's home delivery service. I'm not planning to go out again until we have a better idea what's going on out there in my community. I live about 2 miles from the UC Davis Med Center where they took the patient from Solano County. I'm not taking any chances.
I stocked up on basic canned goods, filled my freezer, bought some dried beans, white and brown rice, and some nuts, a couple large blocks of cheese, and made sure we had extra of stuff like mayo, cooking oil, etc., just extra of whatever we use a lot of.
Stocked up on medical supplies like ibuprofen and tylenol, bacitracin and neosporin, band-aids, AND (very important!) alcohol and peroxide. Those two things are known to kill coronaviruses, as well as bleach. I bought an extra gallon of bleach, too. I also have extra nitrile gloves. I need those anyway because of skin allergies, but we are all using them.
Things you might want to get NOW if you want them: disinfecting wipes (like Clorox wipes) and hand sanitizer (alcohol-based kills coronaviruses). Those things are in short supply. In fact, there's none to be had right now. Fortunately, I still have some of each on hand.
I hope that helps someone.

Have a small generator to run the well long enough to refill water. Lots of woods with game around me. Did pick up a 22 cal. pellet rifle so I won't be heard shopping. Near a river full of fish and spring plants are tasty. Now worried about internet, if it goes out have a hand crank SW radio for news.
Stay safe.
Maybe theyll change, but right now, no plans to stockpile.

(17,288 posts)I was pretty sure that with climate change creating extreme weather (storms, floods etc impacting crops and food distribution) we may run into times of scarcity or very high prices. I also ordered a few solar powered lights and flashlights. I recently added Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer and extra batteries. Already had lots of books. On Friday I ordered quite a few things for delivery to my sister who just moved to my town. So she now has emergency supplies. No issue getting TP, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer from Costco. We live in AZ, no apparent panic here yet. But I believe in being prepared if you can 🙂

Need to get some more Dawn dish soap, too. Noticed the container is inching towards 1/4 full when I did dishes a bit ago. Normally I have extra stocked but haven't seen it on sale for a while. But it is my go to for a lot of stuff so I will pay regular price if necessary. My pantry and freezer are well stocked and will hold me for a couple of months if not more. I always keep it stocked - it is unusual for me to be low on anything.
I have micro greens growing and fresh kale under cover with frost protection. Micro greens can go a long to way to keep you feeling you as though you have fresh veggies. So easy to grow. Plus they are full of vitamins and minerals which we all need.
I paid extra attention to how people handled the passing of peace at church today. Many just nodded and smiled, flashed the old peace sign, or fist bumped. Majority still shook hands and or hugged. I'm a hugger. 🤗. But I did wash my hands well after church and also again when I got home after the pet store run. Ditto before I helped serve communion during worship. Hand washing has been my MO all fall and winter. So far no colds or flu.

(1,000 posts)As it is. Extra is out of the question for us now. We have a little extra water on hand but that's about it.
When we lived in upstate NY , we kept a 21 day supply of food , water and medicines on hand. We never ever regretted that.

(25,183 posts)Just today, we picked up about 20 boxes of shelf-stable milk at the Dollar Tree. They're good for our hurricane season kit, too, and if they're unconsumed by the end of October, they'll go into the general food rotation for the rest of the year. Once the stuff is cold, or mixed with coffee, it's OK.
We already have a lot of stuff in the garage from our move from NY, where we had a big pantry in the basement. We may get tired of the menu, but if we have to hunker down and avoid leaving the house, we won't starve. I just hope we can keep electricity and water service. If this virus takes down workers (even for a couple of weeks of sick leave) it might make some utilities less than stable.

(118,642 posts)i run out of food. Extra toilet paper. Tomorrow i get masks for my dad's healthcare aides at the nursing home. They will have their own supply but i will see if i can get some at the hardware store. I'm really worried about the nursing home. I can stay inside my home for 3 weeks and away from people if there is an outbreak here. I assume they will stop allowing visitors at the nursing home at that time too as they have pretty strict outbreak protocols at the city run nursing home. Hopefully it is nothing. But better to be safe than sorry.
