https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/?ex_cid=rrpromoI am convinced more than ever the deplorables will never abandon him. What we must do is fight for the 10% of undecided voters to vote against him.

And even then, many still are too stupid and ignorant to 'get' what's happening.
A friend's sister is a tRumpe humper, and she's getting mauled on her income taxes: The high-living sister owes more than $5,900.00, because from this year forward, she found out from her accountant that she can no longer declare the deductions that she used to declare under Pres. Obama, and do you know she had the nerve to blame Pres. Obama for tReasous fat asses "For the very rich only" tax code
Her sister, my friend, said she asked her for a loan of $5,000, and my friend told her NO. Just flat out NO. Sis is beyond pissed to the point of not having spoken to her in over 1 month. I'm SO proud of my buddy for setting boundaries against her high-living, tRumputin-lovin' sister, because my friend/her husband have their OWN set of bills and lives to live. I told the friend "Hell, tell your sister to borrow the $5,000 she asked you for from tReasonous tRump."
We cackled, then cackled some more 🤭

(29,199 posts)In the greatest blunder of our democracy, the founders instituted this thing called the electoral college. They never imagined a nation of such disparate states... We could win California by millions of votes (and likely will) and win the popular vote by large margins, and still end up with Trump in the White House.

(25,471 posts)Nearly everyone had an opinion about Trump by the time he won the presidency, if not decades before. If they accepted him after everything that was exposed in the past couple decades plus the primary cycle, then pretty much nothing he could do is going to sway them. It's a primary reason why his approval ratings have been the more consistent in history.
He was exactly right when he said he could shoot someone and not lose support. He knows his audience.
That being said, the extent of the coronavirus impact could be the one thing that could cut through the noise, because it's relatable and tangible, especially when people start dying in larger numbers in the US. Plus, while he would certainly try, in the era of social media and 24/7 news coverage, he won't be able to hide it.

The encouraging polls, however, show his unfavorable rating at very high levels. I hope this increases as we Lock in a candidate and near November. Make no mistake, this election will Be about voting AGAINST Тяцмр.
If our base doesnt put aside Primary wounds and vote against Тяцмр in 2020, democracy is never going to survive. Its that simple.

Fintan OToole: Trial runs for fascism are in full flow
Babies in cages were no mistake by Trump but test-marketing for barbarism

Fascism doesnt arise suddenly in an existing democracy. It is not easy to get people to give up their ideas of freedom and civility. You have to do trial runs that, if they are done well, serve two purposes. They get people used to something they may initially recoil from; and they allow you to refine and calibrate. This is what is happening now and we would be fools not to see it.
One of the basic tools of fascism is the rigging of elections weve seen that trialled in the election of Trump, in the Brexit referendum and (less successfully) in the French presidential elections. Another is the generation of tribal identities, the division of society into mutually exclusive polarities. Fascism does not need a majority it typically comes to power with about 40 per cent support and then uses control and intimidation to consolidate that power. So it doesnt matter if most people hate you, as long as your 40 per cent is fanatically committed. Thats been tested out too. And fascism of course needs a propaganda machine so effective that it creates for its followers a universe of alternative facts impervious to unwanted realities. Again, the testing for this is very far advanced.
Once the market settles down he'll be feeling his oats again. The GOP too. I hear they're already back on point with Biden/Hunter Biden accusations.

(10,749 posts)The RWers being polled are not thinking anymore. Their support is ingrained, visceral. Their hatred of "the other" prevails. It doesn't matter what questions they are being asked. They are not listening. Not only are they not listening or not thinking, they're answers on a scale of 1-5 are probably always at the high end. Trump is the best - at everything. And, away from the polls, when they are told that he's wrong, that can't be because everyone else is a liar, everything rational people say is a hoax.
Put aside the old say, trump could shoot someone on fifth avenue and get away with it. Sure. But think about what he could do with one call for action. If he loses the election, for example. We all sort of joke about what if he refuses to leave the WH. No jokes, but what if he puts out a call to action, a call to take up arms.
Again, all joking aside. These people are no longer listening to anyone else. They are no longer thinking. Jim Jones got hundreds of people to kill themselves and their children. Is it all that crazy to consider that trump and his sycophants could get thousands to kill "the other"?
I know, I know, it's easy to predict crazy shit. But somehow, as we approach the election, I can't help but think it may not be so crazy.

I'd put people like Ted Cruz (Harvard educated, A+++ grades) in this. He doesn't really like Trump, in fact he probably can't stand him personally. But he supports him simply because Trump has been conservative.
