The virtual shutdown of one of the worlds biggest economies is hurting business around the globe, from multinational firms to truck drivers and tour guides.
If the coronavirus plunges the world into recession, China will be the biggest reason. Economists caution that its shutdown threatens the economies of Japan, South Korea, Europe and even the United States. Huge corporations like Apple, Microsoft, AB InBev and Pfizer have already seen an impact.
Even those warnings understate Chinas reach. An economic disaster just four decades ago, China now touches the lives of billions of people around the world. China matters to Mr. Smerling, Chilean farmers, Thai tour guides, Indian automakers, Mongolian truck drivers and countless others who depend on its economic might.
When China stops, they feel it.

(81,485 posts)Coronavirus outbreak in China impacting the prom, wedding dress supply
The coronavirus outbreak has already had a big impact on the stock market and now its hitting closer to home for some Iowans.
The manager of the Heart to Heart boutique in North Liberty tells KCRG TV the coronavirus outbreak is affecting the prom dress supply which all have one thing in common. I would almost say all of it comes from China, boutique manager Rochelle Jeffers says. The American Bridal and Prom Industry Association reports about 80 percent of Western-style wedding dresses are made in China.
While Heart to Hearts bridal dress supply hasnt been affected much by shutdowns in Chinese factories the prom dress supply has. They stopped cutting the dresses, so they dont make them anymore, so whatever is in stock is all that we can order, Jeffers says. University of Iowa business analytics professor, Jennifer Blackhurst tells KCRG TV its not just the formal gown industry thats feeling the ripple effects of the coronavirus outbreak.
So much comes out of China these days that I think were going to see just about every industry impacted by this, Blackhurst says. Blackhurst said that impact is heightened by how interconnected international supply chains are. If a company here doesnt have a direct supplier, lets say, in China, they might have a supplier in China, and so I think over the long term, I think were going to see a more severe impact over time, Blackhurst says.

I guess we have to decide if it's money or lives that count. We have to decide if we are going to tackle the epidemic as one planet, one world or stay an ideological island and take the consequenses.

I wouldn't say I'm "suffering", however. I'm too much of a Nihilist for that.
