Some more comments from my 90-year-old mother

We don't often talk politics, but we got talking about the election and voting in Florida, etc.

You should have heard her. My mother never curses. And when she does it's not particularly curse-y. But when talking about the orange shitgibbon, you'd have been amused. About the only words not used were fuck and motherfucker. Otherwise, every other epithet was used. Bastard, idiot, even asshole, which shocked even me. Moron, stupid, evil. His followers at his rallies don't have a single brain between them. No humility, no humanity. I liked that one. My mother was a New Yorker born and bred, now retired in Florida. She said one time she was crossing a street and trump was crossing as well. She disliked him even then and couldn't believe everyone in the crosswalk was shouting out, Don, Don, Don. She couldn't believe it then and still can't figure out how he became president.

One thing she said was a bit alarming and an eye-opener. We talked about what if Bernie is the candidate. She said she can't vote for him because, and I quote, he's a socialist. Mind you, this is not a Fox News watcher. And yet, there it is. Can't vote for a socialist. We talked for a bit about that, and I think she gets that she has to vote for whoever is the Democratic candidate, even if she has to hold her nose doing so. My mother is a sharp-as-a-tack 90. She's not the kind of old person who can be told what to do. So she needs to be convinced that if Bernie is the candidate, she has to vote for him. And I know she will. Her disdain for trump is visceral, both as a former New Yorker as well as a decent human being. But think about her initial response - can't vote for a socialist. Granted, that's one person. But in an election where every vote will be critical, losing even one because of another visceral response is dangerous.

In a follow-up e-mail, she added: "To even think that "it" could possibly be elected again makes my blood boil. So frightening!!!!!"

were raised our whole lives with the idea that we were in a war with the USSR/Russia. Think about all the monies that we have spent fighting - both active and cold wars. Our whole lives were based on how evil they were - and now Bernie as a socialist. True or not, he won't get the vote - even against Trump.

I still find it amazing that as a nation we made it hard for people (born and raised here) to get aid/financial support, yet we have so many people here from the former USSR receiving aid.
