Washington (AFP) - The United States Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear what may be its most significant case in decades on the controversial subject of abortion.
At issue is a state law in Louisiana which requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.
Groups in favor of abortion argue that the law would severely restrict access to the practice and lead to the closure of two of three remaining abortion clinics in the southern state.
The case, June Medical Services v Russo, will be the first on the hot button issue to come before the court since President Donald Trump appointed two conservative justices -- Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh -- to the nine-member bench.

"Chief Justice John Roberts left open the possibility that he could side with the Supreme Courts liberal wing during intensive, fact-based arguments in a high-profile abortion case.
"The case was the first substantial abortion dispute to come before the top court since the confirmation of President Trumps two appointees, Justice Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
"A vote with the courts four liberal justices to strike down a Louisiana law regulating abortion providers would be a dramatic turnaround for the chief justice, who joined a dissenting opinion from the courts decision striking down a similar law just four years ago. . . . . . . .
"But on Wednesday, Roberts suggested he saw that decision as binding. That ruling found that the Texas law had no medical benefits and placed an unconstitutional burden on women seeking abortion. Roberts twice said the medical benefits for the Louisiana law would likely be the same."

(9,895 posts)Abortion is not going away any time soon. But the health of women exercising that option for their body is very much in danger, more so than any time since 1973.
If this issue does not motivate younger women to get out and vote, and really motivate ANYONE who believes women are equal to men and have every RIGHT to control their bodies, then I really don't know what to say to make it clearer to them...
The GOP wants you to be punished for having sex, they expect that they get to decide your future and they abdicate any role in assisting that "precious life" after it is safely outside of YOUR body. Full fucking stop. ALL of their other bullshit and 'reasons' and 'deeply held religious beliefs' are and always have been utter bullshit. They want to control women, who they view as inferior and they want to punish them for doing what comes naturally to ALL sexually reproductive organisms.
Fuck the "pro-life" movement, they have always been the "anti-women" movement and their fealty to Trump and abandonment of those same 'deeply held religious beliefs' just put the truth to their 47 year old lies.
