General Motors will hire 500 new workers in Austin, Texas, as it brings about 90% of its information technology operations back to its own staff from outside contractors who have done it for decades, the company announced Friday.

The automaker is launching one of its new IT Innovation Centers in the Texas capital, where it has selected a location in the city's northwest corridor and begun hiring.

The new jobs include software developers, database experts, analysts and project managers. GM outsources about 90% of its IT work to a variety of contractors, including tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

GM Chief Information Officer Randy Mott wants the automaker to take direct control of its software development and database systems to bring new vehicles to market faster. The insourcing would require GM to establish several software centers throughout the world.

5. The GM Arlington Texas Assembly plant has been unionized for a very long time. Since 1954 I think

Generally white collar workers in auto plants and other auto facilities never were unionized even up north here in non-right to work states. But their wages were always good and dependent on how much us union guys got. When we would negotiate a new contract for better wages and benefits the white collar workers all got an increase too.

7. Awesome news! I had to call Orchard/HSBC, and a few other companies this weekend. ALL in India.

I'm so freakin' tired of talking to people in other countries that do not understand what I'm saying, and vice versa. The companies want us to buy their products, but they send our jobs overseas and outsource them to contractors, so we don't have jobs to make money to buy their stuff.
