Ive talked to two people today who are rethinking travel plans later this month and have each discovered that their trip insurance specifically excludes epidemics. Unless you are personally sick, youre not covered.

(6,110 posts)Highly recommend it, not even one person was seen wearing mask on ship with 2400 passengers,
everybody seem to be having a great time. I have seasonal allergies, but those got better in the salty ocean air.

(20,759 posts)I was iffy about whether to attend, but before I could come down either way the email arrived - this year's event cancelled. It's not a huge conference- I'm guessing somewhere between 700-1000 people- but it'll make an economic impact.
I told my Mom that as much as I want to have her visit, we're not scheduling any flights for her until the pandemic subsides.
Just got a wedding announcement for a nephew, an August date, and we're thinking "fly or drive"? May well come down on the "drive" side if I can pull the extra few days' vacation it would require.

(14,918 posts)and then the two of us would fly to Japan tomorrow for a trip we had been planning since August. We held out for a long time and only a couple of days ago decided to cancel. Besides the actual risk of catching the virus, which we believe would be extremely unlikely but possible, factors in our decision included the fact that so many museums and events have been cancelled there, anxiety about public transportation, and the possibility of quarantine or cancelled flights back to the U.S. For me, the deciding factor was the fact that I work in healthcare and the conviction that I had no right to risk exposing my patients and colleagues, regardless of whatever risks I might be willing to take on my own. Also, I would not want to expose anyone on the plane, and it seems you can shed virus before you have any symptoms. So, I am disappointed but I am sure that I made the right decision for my situation.

(25,855 posts)I am currently on a cruise ship on my way to Hawaii. No one on board seems remotely concerned.
At the beginning of next month I have plans to take Amtrak to Seattle, and I'll be mightily pissed of those plans need to be cancelled.
Remind me again how many people have gotten sick? How many have died? Honestly, the overreaction is such that you'd think about 50million have gotten sick, and a million have died so far. Can someone give me the actual numbers? And compare those to the current flu numbers.

(1,137 posts)We booked a cruise a year and a half ago. I am not even shaking hands with people, because my immune system is compromised. This is a swingers cruise. Everyone is getting physical with each other. I am not sure I can bring myself to tempt fate.

We will try again in a few years. My hubby who is 70 gets really sick if he catches something, a simple cold usually turns to bronchitis or pneumonia. Normally with flu and pneumonia shots he is ok. No shot for this.

(19,564 posts)I suspect it will manifest after. Most will be young enough to not manifest sever symptoms. They'll infect others who do seek testing, though.
That's an oddity of this virus.

(2,716 posts)Were going for the 60th anniversary of the sister city connection of my home town with a town in Piemonte. We dont know yet if it will be canceled. If it doesnt and our airline (Lufthansa) is still flying there, were going. If it gets postponed, well change our plans too.

(34,383 posts)I wouldn't go to Asia, but there are no cases here or in Michigan so I saw no reason to cancel my plans. Maui is awesome. I spent all day sitting on my lanai watching baby humpback whales play in the channel between Maui & Molokai and I wouldn't miss it for the world. Or a potential virus.

(54,378 posts)My normal schedule puts me in a different country every day, and it's not a job I can do remotely. Either on-site, or I don't get the job done. It's that simple.
So far, I've noticed a dramatic increase in the ease with which I can find space in hotels, trains and plane that are usually infuriatingly full when I need a last-minute booking (which is usually always). The downside will be when I contract the virus, but my guess is that practically everyone in Europe will, sooner or later. We're just too densely populated for that NOT to happen. I'm (to my own amazement) now considered "older," and have a history of heart trouble, so I'm in a supposed danger group, but I'm also not good at being a hermit. So, either it kills me or it doesn't. I figure the world won't cease to turn on its axis one way or the other. I might as well turn with it for as long as I can.

(621 posts)Travel Insurance may not cover preexisting conditions. I only know this because I purchased the insurance simply because I have a preexisting condition, and every day is an unknown. It was NOT in the fine print, either. It took six months of appeals to learn that my expenses would not be covered, although my travel destination did give me credit for a future stay (after I gave them my TripAdvisor ID and said I would use it).
So, because I am immunosuppressed, I wont be traveling until this is under control, which does stink because my son got AMAZING SAT scores, and we were going to check out colleges over spring break. He wanted to hit DC, NYC and Phillythree places that I think I should avoid. So, we will wait. Luckily quite a few have virtual tours, so perhaps he can narrow his list over break.

(31,388 posts)in the Caribbean on Monday. I'm here for two weeks and had this trip planned since last May. My son and his partner arrive Saturday from Raleigh to help me celebrate my birthday. They are a bit worried since the first coronavirus case in NC was confirmed this week in a guy who visited the nursing home in Seattle that had confirmed cases and flew back through Raleigh.
I have a master's degree in public health and have been following this closely. Shared some information with them and advised them of travel practices--especially handwashing--to minimize chance of picking up any bugs: colds, flu, or coronavirus. I think they are coming, but won't really know until Saturday. The kicker is that my son's partner has a fear of flying, so that confounds the whole decision making process. I've written to my son about fear being a motivator, and making a risk/reward decision.
My next travel trip--already booked--is by train in late May to Charleston for the Spoleto Festival. Hopefully, that will happen.
My other son and his partner are leaving tomorrow for a trip to the Yucatan to visit Mayan ruins. As far as I know, they are going ahead with that trip.

(13,493 posts)travel insurance doesn't cover epidemics. Great, right?
I prepaid a hotel in DR for my daughter and myself at the end of this month. I'm considering postposing. The hotel has graciously allowed visitors to use the rooms throughout 2020, so we can reschedule for the beginning of summer, if we choose. I'm considering. My daughter is kid, not an adult, so I want to make the best decision for her health here. (I'm holding off making a final decision until next week.)

(22,035 posts)We're going to Amsterdam in a couple of weeks and we have no intention of cancelling the trip. Our strategy is to simply be proactive in our defenses by using disinfectant wipes on the plane and in the hotel.
The coffeeshops will still be part of our visit but I guess we'll cancel the escorts! (wink)

(42,282 posts)And I am somewhat concerned that they may be cancelled if the virus spread continues into the summer. If this follows the pattern of the Spanish Flu, it could ease during this first summer, then come back harder in fall.

(9,213 posts)wife is already talking about canceling, while I'm thinking that may be the perfect place to go, as long as we avoid being out with the big crowds. I would think out in the open in the air on trails would be just as risky as staying home and going to our normal stores and stuff.
