WASHINGTON The World Health Organization reported this week that the death rate for the coronavirus increased to 3.4% and is more lethal than the flu, which kills tens of thousands of Americans each year.
But President Donald Trump, citing only a "hunch," called the number provided by world health leaders "false."
Asked about the WHO's coronavirus fatality rate findings during an interview Wednesday, Trump told Fux Noise host Sean Hannity: "Well, I think the 3.4% is really a false number."
He added, "now, this is just my hunch ... based on a lot of conversations with a lot of people that do this, because a lot of people will have this, and it's very mild."
Trump later put the number at less than 1%.

Trump's great with numbers. He has more bankruptcies than almost anyone.

(1,351 posts)Considering the lack of testing there are likely to be a large number of unreported cases, if so that will bring the death rate down. But to state it's due to his "hunch" is ridiculous (but not surprising).

(25,857 posts)have mild or no symptoms, the real death rate is nowhere near 3.4%.
While Trump is an idiot, this really isn't as terrible as people want to believe. Especially since those who die seem to be pretty exclusively the elderly and those with underlying health issues. I keep on being accused of being a callous jerk every time I point that out, but the truth is that different people have different risk factors.
And even if 3.4% of everyone who got it were to die, do the math and notice that 96.6 percent of people recover.

So, we should hit them with that high rate until they test to get it down
Trump has the highest most tremendous rate in the world
Deaths are tracked. More testing would bring the death rate down, not make it go up.
Currently there are 16 deaths and 282 confirmed cases in the US. That is a .5% death rate.

(3,803 posts)Your numbers give a 5.67% death rate.
And your first two sentences are in total agreement with the post you are responding to. So why the "Huh?"?

(1,351 posts)I meant the .5 as in 5.67%. Just a couple of days ago that the percentage was far higher, but as more cases are being uncovered the percentage of deaths is going down.
If it's true that 80% of those who have coronavirus show no symptoms, then it's only common sense that the death rates will go down the more testing we do.

Watch for Trump to start saying how everyone said he was wrong, but he turned out to be right. Even though scientists have been pointing out that the number would likely go much lower since very early on. If not for that, panic really would be high.
Trump's saying the number is lower and trying to take credit (instead of explaining why the number is lower and crediting the experts). Trump's habit of lying constantly actually casts doubt on the true number.
