I hate to say it but the crazy preppers may have been right.

They are probably sitting all smug and content on their hoards of supplies in their isolated bunkers.
The rest of us will have to rely on government help and Trump will ensure it never comes.
(I'll bet the preppers all voted for him though. )

1. Much like the religious right many of them been actively trying to bring about something like this

via their voting choices. They get no credit for having extra fire extinguishers on hand when they've spent decades trying to set shit on fire. In the end its just makes them dirty ass arsonists with a chaos fetish. Sadly, they get to now scratch their end time itch with this.

like that, many of them are, you are correct...but there are some that are only worried about their families and I am beginning to think they are right.

Freddie the Great got that right. Preppers generally prep for a civil war of their own making; a collapse of society that frees them from all of the laws and responsibilities they are forced to live under now. Preparations generally revolve around guns and ammo, and holding up in the mountains" to live a Rambo life of fun and adventure. Most preppers have not thought the situation through and when questioned about their preparations quickly become very defensive. Preparations for a Pandemic require different strategies. Pandemics will favor the smarter over the most well armed.

The right wing preppers are already behind the eight ball as they are denying that there is a potential flu problem. By the time they realize the error of their ways, it will be too late for them.

On the other hand, the original preppers, the Mormans, have been prepping since their existence and have it down to a fine art.

11. I think some preppers get sucked into a downward spiral where they convince themselve they need more

It's an interesting phenomenon. A 3 day stock isn't enough so they go to a 30 day stock and once there, decide that's not enough so they go to a 6 month stock and then on to a year's stock.

Living on SSDI, it took me many months to build a stock as i bought when the items were on sale and for the most part, I used the money I made babysitting, at $4 an hour, to pay for it.

We all should have known a major disaster was coming and prepped for it

I did it to prepare for what's expected to happen in my area from the effects of climate change. The Trump Administration is speeding this along by inaction. I don't expect a total breakdown in society but there will be interruptions in goods and services.

Stocking the pantry for a 2 - 3 week self-quarantine is very doable and requires a single trip to the store.

Preps that last for a year or more take quite a bit of skill and effort and planning.

Do not believe that the virus is a real threat. It appears that believing that the virus is a problem is split along party lines. Again, it is a a case of whether to believe the scientists or the right-wing politicians. The Trump administration is doing everything possible to minimize the possible effects of the virus, and if Trump says it, they believe it, and that is the end of it.

It is faith based politics. There may be a lot of Darwin Awards for those who ignore the seriousness of the issue.

Hahaha, I’m one and it was only a matter of time before...” the big one.” This party is just getting started too. Oh and I’m not smug I’m sure I’ll be one of the first to go down, my age is a factor but I’ll try too avoid it as long as possible.

After living in Florida for so long, I learned to keep plenty of supplies on hand.

That being said, I think people are overreacting with the panic buying.

Will be disrupted for an unknown period.
People will stay home, others will be laid off, panic buying of supplies is already happening around the world.
Many industries rely on material from China, including hospital masks, which won’t be arriving soon. Supplies of hospital masks are getting limited, even for doctors. Raw material for American companies often comes from China and is becoming scarce, including many pharmaceuticals
Hospital beds will overflow So hospitals will have difficulty providing care to even those who don’t have the virus.

A normal president would order many deeply considered drastic measures to control the situation and provide supplies and protection.

Trump will just do whatever occurs to him that will hurt Democrats and sound good to his base.

Things are going to be hard for awhile and people will suffer and die.

They are probably paranoid/excessively fearful and/or hoarders. It's always a good idea to have supplies on hand for emergency situations, especially if one lives in an area prone to hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. Heck, I often have a stash just from taking advantage of great sales on things I use anyway. But, preppers take it all to extremes, and that ain't healthy.

We could all probably get by for a couple of weeks. But if this goes on longer, then what? Not many people have the extra income to have a six-month stock of things, the space to store it all, and the time and management necessary to rotate out to keep expiration dates in check, etc.
