Blasphemy to believe that virus can be transmitted by receiving Holy Communion

https://orthodoxtimes.com/metropolitan-of-peristeri-blasphemy-to-believe-that-virus-can-be-transmitted-by-receiving-holy-communion/?fbclid=IwAR2-jAT6PaHOEea7JCZnJ6skSbiPXr6e6iB5Cv0R_MqV81lM6g0xDzcTkEQ

Metropolitan Klimis of Peristeri sent a clear message in every direction at the Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Peristeri and called on the faithful to “receive Holy Communion without fear.”

The Metropolitan of Peristeri, who presided over the Service of the Rejoicings to the Theotokos (Chairetismoi ) on the first Friday of Great Lent, stressed that the Holy Communion was the body and blood of Christ and, therefore, it could not contract any disease.

Moreover, after reading the encyclical of the Holy Synod on coronavirus, he referred to Infectious Diseases Specialist Eleni Giamarellou. In particular, the Metropolitan said, “The Holy Communion is life. It is a miracle. It is a blasphemy to believe that the virus can be transmitted by receiving Holy Communion” and then he urged the faithful to do it without fear. “Anyone who does not believe in the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion must not receive Holy Communion,” he concluded.

I was thinking this might be satire, but it appears the site in the link is legit. A lot of the most fervent believers are older people. They are the ones most likely to believe this missive. They are the ones most at risk. I hope this does not adversely affect them.

I just barely remember when they put the wafer on each person's mouth and everyone drank from one jug. By the time I received communion it was all sanitized, with wafers on plates we picked them up from and little paper condiment cups for the wine.

It is up to the Church leaders to adapt and modernize the dogma as needed. That's poor advice and lousy, irresponsible shepherding of the flock.

As far as I recall, the problem back then was "unlcean spirits", etc. They had no obvious germ theory and I don't recall a word meaning virus being used in the bible. I don't recall any passage that accounts for a symbolic substitute for the Body of Christ to be anti-viral, even if one takes it as a transubstantiation spiritually.

From what I remember, the Talmud accompanied the Torah in the Judaic tradition, which was a compilation of Rabbinical commentary that would help the people interpret the scriptures in the Torah based on the situation and context. At least, it comes up in my fog here.

That's the way the modern Church should be handling this. Being an idiot should be considered a form of blasphemy since the mind thinks and they should be attributing that to their maker. You don't allow your flock to become deathly ill.

They are an extremely old and conservative branch of Christianity. They make Roman Catholicism look up to date and liberal.

Man Seen Licking Shrine Grids Despite Coronavirus Arrested In Iran

A man who challenged coronavirus health warnings and to make a religious statement licked the grids at a shrine in Iran has been arrested.

Videos showing Iranians licking and kissing the grids of Shi'ite holy shrines across the country have gone viral in recent days. The videos are widely circulated on social media at a time of an ominous breakout of Covid-19 (coronavirus) in Iran.

As coronavirus fast spread in the country, religious leaders resisted quarantines and closure of religious pilgrimage sites, saying this would be an affront to their beliefs.

However, experts and ordinary Iranians called for the closure of all religious shrines in the country to prevent the spread of the virus. In the midst of the debate, some people presenting themselves as true believers began publishing videos showing kissing and licking of doors and grids of shrines to prove that such places are immune to disease.
