I lived without DST for decades (Indiana). We changed because, well, it was stupidly oppositional to be on "Indiana East" time when the rest of the world was on DST.

And no looking back. DST is great. Long evenings for barbecues and walking the dog after work. Time to enjoy the summer even on workdays.

Arizona, I think, still holds out, so that's a place for the resistors.

I changed the hour. Hung it back up. Stepped back to see if it was level/correct. It slid off the hanger, hit the mantle, and then busted up on the floor.

We’d had it for about 15 years. Haven’t been able to find a real replacement yet but we do have a fill in wall clock.

I was all "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The problem was, we were on NY time half the year, and Chicago time the other half.
Then we got it. And wow. TV shows were on at the same time all year! And I never miss a plane because of a time mixup!
And the long summer evenings-- my goodness, those are lovely.

Take it from someone who has experienced no DST... DST is great.

Plus, you know, Marco Rubio was just tweeting his annual "evil government took over my clock" rant. You'd think that is the only problem Floridians face this week.

So I am glad NOT to be siding with Marco Rubio.

45. Having an hour of my sleep stolen is worth a post.
Sun Mar 8, 2020, 03:29 PM
Mar 2020

That is real.

My loss of sleep is real. On the day the clock shifts an hour ahead it actually subtracts an hour from my sleep.

The 6% more people who are dead the week following the time shift are real.

New research finds that fatal car crashes increase by 6 percent the week following daylight saving time (DST). The annual time switch increases sleep deprivation, resulting in jet lag-like symptoms that leave people feeling drowsy behind the wheel of a car

https://www.google.com/search?q=increased+accidents+the+day+after+DST+shift&rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS751US751&oq=increased+accidents+the+day+after+DST+shift&aqs=chrome..69i57.9967j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Fictional longer evenings are not. Evenings are just as long regardless of the time showing on the clock. You have just as many hours to be productive (or play) between work and the time you go to sleep. Just as many hours to sleep.

(I am perfectly fine with fixing DST as the year round time, or ST as the year round time, but changing twice a year is assinine and deadly.)

46. "Fictional evenings"? When do evenings start and end?
Sun Mar 8, 2020, 04:01 PM
Mar 2020

For me, they start when work ends, and they end when night comes. And 4 hours (which is what I get in July) of that lovely golden and silver light is better than three hours.

I think Fictional Evenings would be a great title for a novel, or maybe a book of poetry.

Sun Mar 8, 2020, 04:13 PM

until you need to be in bed to get an appropriate amount of sleep before the next day. Changing the clock does not change that. Sowhat is fictional is the thinking that the hour shown on the clock when the sun sets changes that. It doesn't.

The presence of sunlight does not counter the 6% of additional real people who die the week following playing God with the clock, nor does it give me back the hour that was actually stolen when March 8, instead of having 24 hours, only has 23 (with the critical difference being that the stolen hour was during the time I need to sleep). Those are both real.

AND - whose day starts 3 hours earlier than normal because of a day long conference. (No, wait - make that 4 hours earlier because of the change). So now I have to wake up not at o-dark-hundred, but at o-dark-hundred minus one. That cuts my sleep down to no more than 6 hours tonight. Probably less.

It makes everything better in the summer for those of us farming.

You don't have to get home for work and hay your pasture in the dark, then put away the animals etc. in the dark.

Harvesting in the dark is impossibly hard. If you have another job, and who doesn't who is making part of their living off of farming, you need that extra hour.

What on earth do you people do if you travel into another time zone? Freak out about the hour? Nope, it is either vacation or visiting family and that is too good to be upset about and if it is work you groan and go to sleep an hour early if you can.

31. It needs to DIE!
Sun Mar 8, 2020, 12:12 PM
Mar 2020

Kill it with fire!

It's purpose is gone.

It used to be most people would go home from work at the same time, eat dinner, and then decide which of three or four television propaganda channels they were going to watch.

And if that wasn't enough television, one could buy TV trays and TV dinners, and eat dinner while watching television.

My dad would get home from work, we'd have dinner, and then he'd pop open a beer and watch CBS news. Other dads in the neighborhood might watch NBC or ABC news. Then the family would watch their favorite television shows.

All at the same fucking time, in lockstep, a nation of zombies!

My children can't even comprehend that world. They've rarely had nine-to five jobs. They stream ALL their television, watching it when it's convenient to them. That's the way we watch television too. We watch Netflix and DVDs. We don't watch any cable, satellite, or broadcast television. What the clock says doesn't matter.

Here in the internet age of 24/7 business and services there no reason at all to keep daylight savings time. How many people have jobs where the position of the sun in the sky matters? And do they pay any attention to the clock or do they just start work around sunrise, whether or not they live in a place that changes the clock?

Our children grew up on "hospital time." That's always been disconnected from the regular rhythms of television time. When our children were young my wife and I were able to arrange our schedules such that we never needed childcare, but it also meant we were entirely disconnected from the tyranny of television schedules. All that turning the clock ahead accomplished was to force me to deal with a bunch of cranky children when I had to get them off to school.

Myself, I'm going to be really cranky tomorrow when I have to get up at five but my internal clock is saying it's four. Maybe I'll flame some people who deserve it.

We should just stay on standard time. It seems like we have less and less standard time every year. It just doesn't seem right to have daylight at 8:00 p.m. anyway. I think we spend more on energy in the South because we have to keep our air conditioners cranked up full blast well into the evening. I hate to get my power bill in the summertime.

Five, six years ago, I scored a smashed clock and gave it a new life by fabricating a nice wooden face for it. It works like a charm, but it initially freaked us out when it automatically adjusted for this daylight savings thingy. For some reason, it failed to do anything this time. I initially thought it might have gotten hung up with the leap year, but it would have changed yesterday. I'm just going to watch it for another day or so to see what it does before I change it.

Does anyone know how this mystery clock works, and what didn't happen this time?
