How and why does someone get an idea like that? To make fun of an epidemic and those who have died around the world. (and those who will die) .. There were at the time no confirmed cases in Washington D.C.

..Far more important is where he gets an idea like that?...To make fun of an epidemic and those who died and will die? Gaetz has to be so self centered and self assured, that he thinks and is sure he can get away with it, and not face any consequences for his actions. Perhaps he comes from a "safe district" where he is sure that he will be reelected in November. To pull a stunt like that, (and at this point, Gaetz has not apologized) shows a total lack of concern, and disrespect to this awful situation. It is very much like throwing a roll of paper tissues during a press conference in Puerto Rico. Gaetz is absolutely sure that he can get away with it, just like Trump. But I don't think he will. That stupid gas mask thing will be the end of Gaetz's career in one way or another. I don't know how that will happen, or when, but that is what is going to happen. More will die, and if Gaetz does apologize it is too late.
..Today, Sunday, it was announced there was a death in Gaetz 's district due to the epidemic. Perhaps Gaetz will never apologize. It doesn't matter, he will lose. In my opinion it is really too late to apologize, but that is my opinion. Who knows who people in his district his district will vote for?
