Talk to any trumpers lately?

Have come across a few who feel the need to tell anyone who will listen that the Covid-19 is not a big deal and is just like every cold and flu we have known before. As proof one woman said her son had the flu and he recovered. These are dangerous people. Some of them will show their defiance by going to work and public places while sick. They are getting a daily dose of this message and feel the need to pass it on.

Trump and his minions like Larry Kudlow need to be restrained from any more comments on the subject. For trump it is time for the 25th Amendment to kick in. He could care less if people die and he is mentally ill.

"I have a Catholic friend who went to confession, and two weeks later, died of coronavirus."

"Ah, but you see, if he had gone to confession every day, he wouldn't have died."

"A woman in my parish went to confession every day, and she died of coronavirus."

"She should have gone to confession twice a day..."

No matter what you confront them with, they'll have a response, no matter how idiotic.

While the doctor in the article is advising people not to panic and overwhelm the health care system, it should be noted that he is from a country, Canada, that has a rational health care program, not to mention a rational national government. Our problem here is that with a shortage of testing kits here in the U.S. no one really has any idea of how many cases there are of this extremely contagious disease. That alone is enough to cause panic and overwhelm the system.

My elderly parents are T.rump supporters. They are scared and agree T.rump is doing a terrible job regarding this crisis only. My brother, on the other hand, went ballistic and displayed a fit in the middle of the restaurant that was seriously unhinged and embarrassing. Said the "hoopla" is going down, haven't heard much about it in the past two days, it's just like the flu, etc.
I calmly tried to give him some statistics but he went nuclear on me. Finally said "Who's the president?" I refuse to answer that question bc I don't acknowledge T.rump as holding that office. He said I have a lot of anger since Hillary lost. Of course I have never raised my voice or shown any anger towards my brother. It was my moms birthday so I dropped it but he continued for another 20 min claiming it's a hoax and I'm stupid to carry sanitizer, buy supplies, etc.
I'm hoping Karma shows up soon.

Who just gets humored wearing his MAGAh hat, stating with certainty that removing an incumbent president during a great economic boom is unprecedented.
The gentleman is probably approaching 90 or so, it's fairly easy to simply change the subject of conversation. Fox noise somehow has a certain appeal to many in his age group, and his language is obviously peppered with the propaganda newspeak.

Liberals are liberal.

The longer older conservatives have been exposing themselves to the bad leaders encouraging extremism, the more affected and also the less interested in adopting new attitudes, which was never big with them anyway. RW brain-fuckering techniques have become very sophisticated.

As for the effects of age, most of us become at least somewhat more experienced and less careless with age (and as studied, with parenthood), which is different from more conservative but is often mistaken for it.

I remember not learning what I should about what Jerry Brown was calling for nearly 50 years ago; surely putting a stop to horror-story mental institutions was a very good and necessary thing? I didn't know he was going to just release CA's mentally ill onto the streets and we were going to leave them there (very like those today enthusiastically trying to repeal the ACA with nothing but similarly high-sounding rhetoric to replace it). I didn't get more conservative after that, just a lot more responsible about who and what I voted for.

As for dying, in China supposedly the death rate in one group for the VERY elderly was 10x what it was for the middle-aged, who were in turn more prone than young people. By far most of us should come out fine (and we do seem to be talking about a lot of people on DU according to one survey I saw), as will most in that idiot subset of conservative-denier types.

Of course older people also make up a large portion of liberals.

Not to smear young people, either, but a lot of those are conservative by nature even if some don't know it yet or won't admit to anything so uncool as agreeing more than not with their grandparents.

Older people vote in much higher percentages than young, who of course tend to average more liberal, culturally if not by nature, and that distorts perceptions. Another factor piled on that is that older liberals, like younger, tend to concentrate in urban areas so most votes are "wasted" compared to those of the spread-out Republican whack jobs whose impact is relatively maximized.

Mar 2020

Happened to me years ago.
A simple cold got worse and worser and would not go away.
But I still went to work at a job I loved.
Came in the third day, admin person asked how I was doing - and the sound I made had her turn around and go right to my boss.
Who immediately came to my desk and firmly said: "Go. Home!"
And I did.

Two days in bed felt better, but still not right.
Called my Dr.'s office and they scheduled me for the following week.
I said no.
"What day would be better for you?
"How about now?"
"That bad?"
"Yes."
"OK. Come in now. We'll fit you in."

I did. They did. Early diagnosis/guess: Walking pneumonia. That was later confirmed.

But back to my point: It's not enough for employees to stay home, employers have to be pro-active in getting those sick - out! And with pay.

I called to ask a financial question and he began the conversation by saying that Trump was going to either get us all killed or put us all in poverty. Spoken like a man with lots of money in the market and kids who go to a private school they closed in NY because of the virus. He actually called my husband after we talked to ask his opinion of the virus (husband is a scientist who works with super bugs).
I think the smart ones, and the rich ones, are either starting to get it, or getting it because it impacts them directly.
