Has there ever been a Democratic President...

...that hasn't inherited a complete disaster from a Republican President?

We spend 4-8 years cleaning up their mess, they come in and claim victory. Spend 4-8 years destroying everything...rinse/repeat.

I'm cranky...so, I'm only considering recent history (and current events).

The Civil War and Reconstruction Congresses were Republican. hedda_foil Mar 2020 #9
That does seem to be the model, and it's very frustrating. n/t Tarheel_Dem Mar 2020 #6

I was born the day Johnson was elected, so Kennedy was before my time. I guess technically you could say Johnson, but I'm not sure that counts.

You did cheer me up a bit, though.

In any case, other than Kennedy (since FDR, at least) you're right.

Sorry, I sometimes think everyone can hear what I'm thinking. I wasn't sure Johnson counted because he followed a Dem along with the circumstances of his election.

coming in in 1933 with the Depression already well underway, and Hitler about to emerge in Germany.

That was the worst, though Obama had a very bad financial crisis... not as bad, and no WWII in the offing.

...probably the most stressful presidency in history. I can't begin to imagine making the decisions he had to make and the pain and suffering he worked so hard to alleviate. I doubt if he spent much time golfing.

And the American people recognized it and kept the Republicans out of the White House for 20 years, after their policies wrecked the economy. Most people probably don't know this (to quote Trump) but the Republicans never had control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency again until George W after 2001. In fact, they've only controlled Congress and the White House three times in history - in the 1920's, in the early 2000s, and in the first 2 years of Trump's term. Hopefully it won't happen again for a LONG time after this!
