for using their money in inflation terms. The TIPS are a hedge against inflation, and you have to pay for the privilege.
For example I bought my TIPS (which is still part of my portfolio) when interest rate was 3% + the inflation adjusted performance.
Everyone is looking for a safe harbor.

The dollar is worth more BUT companies are making less profit. If they are making less profit layoffs occur, stores close, and if companies are on the edge now we may see them go under or file for bankruptcy.
Not a good situation.
