They have been living through pandemonium for a while now and are still friendly and helpful. The sample people work for a separate company and they had to stop due to the virus. The manager at our Costco has kept them on to assist in the store so they won't lose income. Good for him!!

(20,605 posts)under the previous CEO, Wall Street took Costco to task for being too good to their employees.

Average wages at Lincoln Electric is over $100k, and unbeatable benefits.
Wall Street hates them.
I dont know much about Costco but my hat is off to them.

(21,278 posts)Was shocked how many people had large packages of toilet paper and mega packages of disinfectant wipes. The cashier was shocked I was only buying the corned beef and kimchi and not stocking up. The couple front of me asked when they were going to get more rice. She said they bring a new pallet in and its gone within an hour.
This is frightening and laughable at the same time. I always have a case of water for my earthquake preparations and enough food to last 2 months. I had cleaned out my cupboards of expired canned foods which I was going to throwaway but now I might keep it,

(7,645 posts)I think the expired date is the last date they can sell it as new? Always doubted it somehow turned poisonous the next day, hence me eating the stuff.

Plus they've organized water distribution, so that it's not a mad dash.

(9,426 posts)They pay a decent wage, and treat employees like real people, not work horses. What a wonderful thing to do, hire on the sample test people.

(25,407 posts)There were several employees at the entrance dispensing disinfectant wipes. They were around the store handing out wipes. All the Costco employees I saw were wearing protective gloves. They were particularly helpful today. One employee took me halfway across the store to show me where an item was.
The Costco store was a zoo for a Tuesday morning, but the checkout lines moved very quickly. No shortages of stock, that I could see. Even had a house brand (Kirkland) disinfectant wipe for sale in ample supply.
However, the line for the Costco gas station was too daunting. I'll gladly fill up at QT for $1.92/gallon.
I hit Fresh Market for bacon, but waved off because of the line at the meat counter ("Now serving #4! .. #4!" - I was #32). But picked up some prepared foods. Then to Publix. Crowded, but everyone was calm and polite. No shortages, except for one of the items on my list: collard greens. The produce manager said to come back early tomorrow, because she has collards coming in on the 7 AM truck.
So, we now have about two weeks of good eating layed in, and another week of beenie-weenies and canned beef stew. We are hunkering down for our social avoidance program.
Also bought a case of wine at Costco. Medicinal pinot noir.

(20,605 posts)My Chinese friend told me there is one Costco in China (Beijing). They allow 1,000 people in the store at a time. The loudspeaker says essentially "Get your stuff and get out!" They wipe down each cart after it is used.
The major stores are doing well here, but Costco has the human touch.
