any type of financial aid from the church?
I'm just wondering about when Mitt was to have served his mission in France - was that subsidized in any way?

(17,291 posts)I'm actually surprised. I'd always assumed they got a modest stipend from the church.

(30,741 posts)However, I have seen some help from local congregations. In my brother's apartment building, there is an apartment across the hall from him that is rented by the local Mormon church. Young men on missions can live there free of charge. They also don't cook for themselves or pay for many meals. Local church members have them in for nearly all meals.

The Mormon church relies almost entirely on unpaid workers. Bishops aren't paid, as far as I know, all church functions are provided by members who are "called" (translation: ordered by the bishop) to be things like secretary, help with church services, do maintenance of facilities, go on missions, etc etc etc.
Makes a person wonder where all the tithe money goes. Property taxes and utilities can't run all that much.......

(22,144 posts)Which would mean names on the org charts. He could also be paid staff or consultant, but I would doubt that.

(32,062 posts)I can't imagine he would be doing that now. Interesting though ...

(26,079 posts)The males, anyway. Some women do it, but most are married by then.
on edit: I have ex-LDS friends.

(3,579 posts)My UPS driver did that, joined the navy, and now drives for UPS. His response to going on a mission was NFW jack.
Nice guy too.

And, if they live in UT, they won't be getting a good job. Ever.

(31,011 posts)I imagine that if one chooses not to, they can expect a certain amount of grief. I do know of one guy who did not go on his mission because his dad had a heart attack. No one thought less of him because of the circumstances.
We lived for many years in an area that was 99% Mormon. It was a different world.

(31,011 posts)A specific amount is then dispersed to the missionary by the church.
They expect their students to live very frugally. Not only that, the church limits the missionaries on how much contact they can have with their families during this time. I'm not sure how they control it. The missionaries have very strict rules during this time.
I guess making it difficult for them is supposed to strengthen their character or devotion or something.

(11,470 posts)A few days ago...I think it might have been the two glasses of wine I had but when they asked me if I needed help, I told them I thought they did because their church was a cult. I also told them we were atheists. Sweet girls looked shocked.
I live in small town where most go to church...
I feel like if they have the right to try to tell me how to live on my property, I have right to my opinion that they are in a cult...
