(6,931 posts)on Friday. My doc says it protects against 23 strains of pneumonia but NOT the coronavirus. Maybe this guy knows something she doesn't.
OhNo-Really
(3,985 posts)Im getting a back up antibiotic because of extreme susceptibility to bacterial pneumonia.
Otherwise, I accept the outcome and have things in order just in case. Im high risk because of hypertension and heart disorder caused by an infection.
I just want to sing in the angelic choir even if only allowed to pantomime ☺️

(34,126 posts)Your doctor knows something this guy doesn't - the difference between COVID-19 pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia.
(It is possible to get a secondary bacterial pneumonia - BUT - that is not the pneumonia that the majority of COVID-19 patients have.)

(34,126 posts)a secondary pneumococcal (bacterial) pneumonia. Just a couple of examples.
No. Vaccines against pneumonia, such as pneumococcal vaccine and Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) vaccine, do not provide protection against the new coronavirus.

The short answer is no, says Dr. Rachel Roper, associate professor of microbiology and immunology at East Carolina Universitys Brody School of Medicine.

(51,651 posts)AFTER almost dying from pneumonia but they told me the shot was for the kind that I didn't have (there is viral and bacterial the nurse told me). That was in 2007. Are there more effective vaccines out there now or should the one I got be good for the rest of my life??

(2,192 posts)I don't know which kind the vaccine was. But this was in 2009, I was 49 and they told me it would be good for 5 years. Guess I'm overdue.

(51,651 posts)I am going in to my primary doctor next week and didn't want to (paranoid about germs in doctors' offices) but maybe I'll ask him for a booster vaccine while I am there. I only needed an Rx refill but it has been a year and he insisted on seeing me in person. I'll call tomorrow and make sure they have a new vaccine waiting for me with my name on it. Thanks!

(11,949 posts)In the 1918 influenza almost all deaths were caused by viral pneumonia. Which hit fast. It greatly confused the doctors at the time who did not know viruses existed. They knew what bacterial pneumonia looked like very well saw it all the time.
But again. Your advice is good. Bacterial pneumonia is always a risk after an illness in the lungs.
Unfortunately at 53 I cant get it. Otherwise I would.

(10,184 posts)I got my pneumonia shot and I get a flu shot every year. I want to live long enough to die of congestive heart failure just like my parents. I've got maybe twelve years to go based on my family genetics.

And he said that was a good thing to do
He also said, in general, If there is a vaccine, get it.

(20,882 posts)Its a big no no for me as I have multiple sclerosis.
I had a tetanus shot a few months ago (which I should not had as it was not necessary!) and it sickened me greatly.
Being I've been told not to get vaccinations because my immune system so unpredictable, I have to take my chances.
I do not believe they will have a vaccine for COV any time soon if ever.
Even after they discovered the cause of AIDS and have developed treatments for it, they still have NO vaccine for this virus either.
How many will die because of the lack of information and medical supplies (like face masks and test kits) will there be before people rise up?
This is one sad situation not just for the sick and elderly but for the entire USA!
