Back in 2013 when the city was in financial crisis. I even heard the sum of 20 million being batted about for the entire collection. A fire sale as it was called. The entire matter was nonsensical and ill-advised. Those Cons didn't have a clue. 20 Million indeed! And today, MSNBC is broadcasting from there.
It's a lovely, intimate museum not far from Wayne State University and an amazing asset for the city.

(4,425 posts)At one time it was ranked in the top 5 in the US. Maybe it still is. It doesnt surprise me one bit that the GOP controlled legislature attempted to steal it for a laughable $20 million.

(10,014 posts)We had a similar situation when the repugs in the Iowa legisature talked about selling Jackon Pollack's "Mural" that was given to the University of Iowa Museum of Art by Peggy Guggenheim in 1951. Its value was estimated in 2016 at around $140 million. The UIMA still owns the painting although it's frequently on loan. It was exhibited at the Columbia Museum of Art in 2019, and then at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2019-2020.
Its a fascinating and historic piece of art.

(35,454 posts)Though for a time it seemed as if the ignorant Philistines would win. Imagine knowing so little that they would actually consider selling it all for that price. I believe the final nail in the coffin was when the Ford family stepped in and said the state had no right to sell it, it was given to the city under certain conditions.
