Seriously, I read it twice. I could not believe it and even now it just jangles my nerves.

Start pulling committee memberships and censuring some members.

Everything down to the office supplies should be on the table.

Racist tweets?

Donnie Shit for Brains and Retrumplicans are acting as if the Democratic Party doesn't exist.

McCarthy is a....not good guy....(self edited) but I feel this specific criticism is unwarranted.

Does what he said demonstrate "a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices"? Well, that's him every day of the week and twice on Sunday but he doesn't demonstrate that behavior here.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bigot

Does he spread misinformation here?
No, he directs people to the CDC.

Is calling COVID-19 "Chinese coronavirus" misinformation? Well, it is from China and it is a member of the coronavirus family. Is saying "Spanish flu" bigoted or misinformation?

Does he actually blame anyone in his post? No, he doesn't.

There is a metric ton of stuff to put on McCarthy but this isn't it.

Go Joe!

in this instance, there is none. It assists neither diagnosis nor prognosis of the individual or the collective population.

Hence, using that labeling is an overt and conscious decision rather than educational, assisting or for clarity. Rationalizing its usage as benign is some pretty weak pretense.

(1) how carefully the name of the virus was chosen to intentionally avoid associating it with a place or ethnicity?
(2) the racial targeting that is being done as a result of this virus?

Calling it the Chinese coronavirus is both intentional and racist. Period.

And as to the second, which you acknlowledge, it sounds like you are OK with him being racist. Using racist tendencies to drive fear and compliance is not acceptable. Period.

As to the first, the name was expressly chosen to avoid identifying a country or ethnicity with it. Nothing to do with science, it was a political/social decsion to avoid a name that would have racist connotations.

The names have to be generic, based on science-y things like symptoms or severity—no more places (Spanish Flu), people (Creutzfeld-Jacob disease), or animals (bird flu). As Helen Branswell wrote in Stat in January, Hong Kong residents in 2003 hated the name SARS because they saw in the initialism a specific reference to their city’s status as a Special Administrative Region in China. And leaders of Saudi Arabia didn’t much like it when Dutch researchers called a coronavirus HCoV-KSA1 ten years later—that stands for Human Coronavirus, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its eventual standardized name, Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome, still ended up sounding like it was blaming the entire region.

The result of all that rulemaking and political sensitivity is the anodyne Covid-19. “We had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease,” said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press conference Tuesday. “It also gives us a standard format to use for any future coronavirus outbreaks.”

"everything you need to know" being on the CDC website.

Prudent citizens around the U.S. will stay abreast on news from their local authorities and if they so chose to further educate themselves, from dozens of other web sites such as news sites around the globe and medical authorities such as Harvard Medical, Cedars-Sinai, etc.

This is simply the GOP trying to completely control the public's exposure to news and data.

Sorry, Kevin - we're much smarter that that............
